I may take a run to the Black Hills this summer. It would be in the last half of August. I don't know much about the area other than it has some great riding. What advice would you give if I was to spend a few days there?
Stay in the black hills....every little own is a great motorcycle stay.....don't know what you like to do, but there's lots of sightseeing, caves.....etc. etc. you will love the hills......
when you enter SD there are "welcome centers" that are rest areas where you can get maps and pamphlets . stop and pick up a map along with brochures of the black hills. everything is free.
We always go after Labor day. Lot less people. We rent a cabin. You have your own personal space and it's much quieter. When touring the Wild life Loop. go early, the buffalo are more active then. Mount Rushmore is best seen in the morning when the sun illuminates their faces. We visit all the popular sites early morning before the tour buses jam everything up. Trail rides allow you to see thing you can't from the road.
Every gas station in the hills has those free maps that have all the good rides and sights to see. Make sure you get yourself one of em. Ain't a bad ride anywhere in the hills!
Good information. I'm planning a ride up that way myself.
Any suggestions on the best time of the year to make the trip? I'm planning on going through Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Starting in Colorado. Have never seen Mt. Rushmore. Definitely on the bucket list.

If you like it hot and busy, go during the Sturgis Rally. If you like it cool, not so crowded with cheaper lodging rates, go off season. I've been told that during the rally that vehicles were backed up for an hour just to get through the Needles
one lane tunnel.
