Default Route 66

Hello

I am in the early stages of planning a trip and would like to ride Route 66 from LA to New Mexico on my way home.

Anyone done this and can tell me roughly how long it will take. Any pointers?

I would say 4 days---you need to stop at the many photographed spots on the way-----some of the ride is barren desert[stay hydrated ] and take your time and enjoy.

I,ve crossed the country many times and still wished I spent just a bit more time on each adventure , lots of interesting things along the way we missed.

Talk to people as often as you can -you learn much that way----take plenty of pictures and let us know how it turns out

I love the area! Most of SR66 or US66 just parallel I-40. You exit I-40 and check out some old tourist traps or an old diner and checking out that statue in Winslow AZ. But for the most part your blasting down
I-40 passing a bunch of 18 wheelers and checking out the big crater in AZ. The last time I did that part of the country the highway was fairly clear of traffic. It was mid-June. I didnt expect it to be so lightly traveled. This was in 2014...very memorable. I had time to explore NM. That area around Red River. Nice...

Enjoy!

I watched a 6 or 7 series ride done by a comedian Billy Connolly
(first episode), was pretty good, you may or not want to watch. Enjoy the ride.

Make sure you take in Oatman Az worth the side trip.

Thank you guys for the response and I will definitely check out that series.

The unfortunate thing is I am planning this ride for next summer, so I have a ways to go haha. We are starting in Denver and going toward Lake Tahoe/San Fran than riding the coast to LA. From there start the Route 66 travel.

Our dealer has a Route 66 trip every year. I did it 3 years ago with about 20 riders - from Navy Pier in Chicago to Santa Monica Pier. We rode every conceivable inch of it (that's humanly possible) and took us 7 days. There was a stretch that was so horrible I almost wished I hadn't gone. We didn't stop at all the traps, just the more memorable ones - otherwise it would have taken longer. They say if you REALLY want to experience the whole thing - it will take about a month. That's too much for me, a week was doable. The Route 66 book they give you (about 100 pages) covers "EVERYTHING" about it. It should be on everyone's bucket list. Glad I did it. Then did a Saddlesore 1000 on the way back. Crossed off 2 items from my bucket list.

Next I'd like to do the whole Lincoln Highway from coast to coast. That would be a REAL challenge. That, I think is pretty much impossible.

I would love to have rode the whole stretch, but we are only doing Santa Monica to New Mexico than home. What were the miserable parts for you?

Semper Fi btw
