Default Pueblo VIA Amarillo, TX

Headed out in the morning for Pueblo Colorado from Denver Colorado VIA Amarillo Texas. I have a Retreads Regional Rally in Pueblo starting on Monday and decided I didn't want to waste a perfectly good weekend. So it's off to the Big Texan for a steak and to see the Cadillac Ranch. Then I will decide what to do from there, but my plan is to ride some of Route 66 before heading to Pueblo on Monday morning.

One of my 2017 regrets.... I was in Chicago and heading West.... should have run ‘66 to the Beach, and then headed North East to Cody.

I was born & raised in Amarillo, still remember when the original Big Texan opened in 1960, it was located on Amarillo Blvd west just before Grand street. It was just a little red brick building but seemed really big back then. They used to have a cowboy on a horse greeting waving people as they drove by and when he wasn't on his horse he was greeting customers as they came to the doors to come inside. I'm back there a couple times a year visiting family and friends but have not ate there since the 80s. It's definitely a tourist attraction.

Once your visit to Cadillac Ranch is complete, head back east towards Amarillo on IH40 until you get to Tascosa Road/Hwy 1061 then take Tascosa Road until it deadends into Texas Plains Trail/Hwy 385 and take that north all the way to Dalhart. From there take US87 to Texline and Clayton NM all the way to Raton NM then turn north on IH25 to Pueblo.

Staying on 287/87 all the way is one boring stretch of highway. Even at night when the flashing lights on rolling irrigation sprinklers make it seem otherworldly. Oh yeah, gas up before you leave Amarillo.

You're up on the high Texas Staked Plains or Llano Estacado
A little old band from Amarillo called Cooder Graw

Ended up going across Hwy 50 to Lamar, then dropping down into Amarillo on Hwy 287 for the first day. Then next day ran out to the Bug Ranch east of Amarillo, then the Cadillac Ranch, then across I-40/Route 66 to Hwy 84 in NM up to Las Vegas NM for the second day. We made stops in Vega, Russell and Adrian TX, then Tucumcari and Santa Rosa NM along the way. It was a great trip. My riding partner got to check The Big Texan, Cadillac Ranch, and Route 66 off her bucket list. It was a great day on Fathers day for her that way as it was her first Father's Day since her Dad passed away in April.

Then the third day was blasting up I-25 to Pueblo.

BTW.... My riding partner is shown in my signature photo. Although she has a newer bike, a 2014 Deluxe in purple metal flake.
