Just got back from Alpine, TX and the Big Bend National Park. Great roads and views. I highly suggest making a trip there. Fort Davis is just north with many good rides as well.
we are heading out there next weekend for the "worlds longest poker run". study butte to presidio to marfa to fort davis to balmorehha to ft. stockton to marathon to alpine and back to study butte. little over 400 miles--be interesting to see what the wildfires from last summer did.
Big Bend is one of my favorite places. Spent a lot of time there in the late '70's and early '80's on dual purpose bikes. Several of us would stay at Terlingua Ranch and ride the dirt roads and trails and then spend a day or two riding the paved roads in the park. Last time I was there was in '97 with the wife and daughter passing through. Wife and I and another couple are going to spend some time there next month on the way to Tombstone and Moab. Got reservations at the lodge in the basin. Ready for next month!!!! I hope to do a thread on the trip as we go....just have to see how it works out. That being said, I would recommend Big Bend to everyone.

You guys stopping off at the Hippie campsite they installed at Marfa? If so can you post a picture id like to see it. I stayed the night in the rest stop a few years back dang longest night I ever had with the train blowing its horn every time one passed by. Only thing across the street was a field with a portugue gate leading in to it. Must of been 10 trains go by it seemed like any way.
Be sure and make the River Run from Terlingua to Presidio. Steepest public road hill climb in the state. Also, if you ride your bike up to the telescopes at McDonald Observatory, you will be on the highest public paved road in Texas. There is a great little hotel in Balmorehea with some great mexican food next door. Here is a slide show from Balmorehea.
Be sure and stop at El Patio in Presidio for some damn good mexican food!

My wife and I rode from Tucson To South Padre Island through that area Sept./Oct. 2012. We're planning to do the same trip this year. You are absolutely right, the roads and scenery through there are outstanding and I encourage anyone to ride that part of Texas.
