I stayed in Kalispell. Nice town. I like architecture and found some neighborhoods of big old homes to ride through. Small town but has everything one needs.
kalispell is the closest town to GNP, has a cool downtown and is a good place to stay.
Sept.2018 we were in Yellowstone and I was told of big forest fire at Glacier, how bad was the damage?
I went through right after they reopened it.... burnt trees.... but I dont consider forest fire damage destructive or even ugly, unless there is property damage or people get hurt.... just a natural and important part of nature.
Love it up there, looks like you have plenty of good info already.
We packed a picnic lunch last time we were up there and stopped at a nice viewpoint to eat and take it all in,enjoy!
Been there quite a few times,it's just a one day ride from my place albeit an all day ride.
We did it in early August. It was 40 degrees when we got up in the morning and it had snowed in the pass. Luckily it was plowed and melted by the time we got up there.
Been all over the world, Europe, Asia and Australia. That road is the most beautiful place I have ever seen!

Excellent choice for a great ride. What to see?? I rode it last summer and at times I wished I was a passenger just so I could marvel at it all more than I could while handling the joy sticks. We rode east of the park to a small town called Cutbank MT. More rooms available and at a much better rate than the rooms in or even near the park. You'll love the ride!
Best to check the park website prior to heading out,we were going to make this trip in June then were told that the Going to the sun rd. still hadn't opened yet. Not a long riding season up there!
I'm going to try and make this trip in 2020 too. Best months June or July-Aug?
I'd advise waiting until after July 4th. I've been there in June a couple times where avalanches closed the road. If you wait too late (late July and on), you can get into the fire season and that kills the views. Last time i was there, Sept 2017, the fires were so bad, they closed the lodge due to the heavy smoke.
