Planning on returning to Houston from San Diego, Ca in mid May 2020 and wanted to know the pros vs cons on traveling hwy 8. Have heard negatives & positives on taking this route and wanted to get others views.
I'm curious what alternate route you are comparing 8 & 10 also. Pros would be the most direct and fastest route. Cons might be the same if you are planning a sight seeing tour vs. just getting to where you're going. I think it would be very difficult to avoid the interstate if that is your goal.
Only other option 15 to 10 but was curious as to how bad the 8 could be for riders with the altitude / road conditions. Not really wanting to take any chances on icy roads or cold weather so if 8 could possibly result in either of those conditions then 15 here we come.
You shouldn’t have any ice conditions. The 8 merges into 10 south of Phoenix. The going through New Mexico the road is in horrible condition. Unless they fixed it since 2018, it is extremely rough, broken, etc. but there’s not much other choice.
Hwy 15 or 215 to I-10 is insane all the way to Palm Springs.
I ride I-8 over the pass all winter. Never a problem. Sometimes wind shuts it down for trucks But rarely.
I love the rock formations going over the pass and dropping into the desert. The speed limit is a mere suggestion.
Your post says you're travelling in mid-May. You won't have to worry about icy roads seeing that it'll be close to the 90's that time of year. The elevation goes up after San Diego, but not like Colorado elevations.
