I was hoping, but I can't think of a lot of times I've regretted being careful when someone suggested I do so.
Absolutely understood. I’ve ridden about 5000 miles of NC backroads since late fall between Asheville, Boone, all the way over to Raleigh. All just a little east of where you are headed. Same trees and conditions and it just hasn’t been a problem unless it was while the leaves were actually falling a few months ago. Safe travels!
and while we're at it....why is the bad ice called black?
White ice is fine.....we put it in our drinks....skate on it....it looks cool hanging from the eaves.
A busload of nuns, orphans, and puppies goes off the side of a cliff....the cause....black ice.
Am I reading into this too much....or maybe just stirring it up?
Don't know. Ice is water. Water is clear.
I would guess, maybe u can't really see it or do not expect it is there. Black. <-- Blends in with the road and is unsuspecting. ? Good question.

LOL! Yuppers...........
I would think, even when the leaves have fallen, how many times will a car or bike maybe go off the main road kicking dirt, gravel, leaves onto the road for us unsuspecting ones? Or a heavy rain or winds?
It is always better to be prepared. Wiser and aware is always better than less wise and unaware.

Yes You are correct.
At least in my country we define Black ice as a
very thin layer of ice that has been frozen solid very fast, thus making that ice like transparent glass.
Happens every year here.
I have skated on lakes with ice that are strong enough to carry people walking/skating but so transparent that one could see down towards the lake bottom.
Black ice making problems for cars often occurs on bridges over waters like rivers or lakes.
I got a trip coming up to this area with a group of people... Everyone will be based for the week out of of place northeast of Robbinsville (where the flag is on the map below), This is what I got so far, what am I missing as far as any "you don't want to miss this" areas? Also, anything on here look like a "don't waste your time" route? This will be my first time to this area, and I figure the weather will be pretty hit and miss with late spring showers and temps from 50's to 70's... anyways appreciate any feed back. Hopefully the map is detailed enough to get an idea of where/what the roads and routes are.
I am riding from Mesa AZ to Rochester New York for my brothers wedding in June. Plan on riding the blue ridge highway on my way home and hope the weather is good so I can side trip to the dragon and maybe a few others.
I should be wandering thru from the 22-25th but as work is only giving me 16 days I won’t have the time I would like to wander around much.
No trip to the tail of the dragon is complete for me without stopping at Topoco Lodge to eat. Can’t beat sitting out on their patio next to the river with a burger and a beer on a beautiful day……
