Planning the Back of the Dragon this July and have 1st night in Princeton, WV. Any recommendation for price and cleanliness of where to stay? Possibly 10 bikes... Thanks in advance for any advice!
We have never stopped in that town, but hard to go wrong with a Holiday Inn Express. For me, so close to Roanoke VA, I would likely go over that way. Lots of nice hotels, restaurants and bars in the downtown area. Good luck.
If you are not set in staying in Princeton, WV, I'd suggest as an alternate Wytheville, VA. Lots of places to stay in that town and seems to be motorcycle friendly.
Bluefield VA/WV is just a "stones throw away" and motel selection would probably be better but I've stayed in Princeton and it was OK.
H-D dealerships in both Bluefield and Wytheville.
I (we've) planned two trips in the past to do the "loops" in that area and had to cancel both one due to medical issues and the other a storm front that reached up into WV which is as far south as I was able to go before being chased north to avoid that storm.
On our last scheduled trip we had booked rooms in Marion, VA and was planning on using that as a "hub" in order to to as many of the "loops" as possible.
We (the wife and I) drove the "Back of the Dragon" several years ago in a car and even that was a great trip..
FWIW, watch your speed on those small towns as I have heard of people getting speeding tickets for barely exceeding the speed limit.
Intersection of I77 and Rt 460 in Princeton has a Hampton Inn and Days Inn. Walking distance from a couple steak houses and a Cracker Barrel. Other side of the intersection has a Fairfield Inn and Country Inn and Suites. Short hop down 460 to Tazwell and the Back of the Dragon. Enjoy the ride. Lots of great roads besides the Back in that area.
