Southern Forest Heritage center, Longleaf, LA
In teen age years, I always heard stories about the sawmill that closed in 1969 just out north of the town where I did school. .... 15 miles away. We never went there. Legend was they just locked the gate one day.
After I moved away the state cleaned up a little and made this spot. It was awesome to me. Steam and early diesel equipment still out there. Much in the shops and sheds that were busy back when. Old equipment and parts still in shops and piles. A lot of history about the CCC and WW1 military transfer spot, camp Claiborne,
Planeing machine. Ran on electric from incinerator next to it. Sawdust fueled
Old machine shop. Parts in here and outside
They have 3 of these, various states of decay. A group is restoring this one
Welcome, front center old company store. Lots of info about nearby CCC and ww1 military terminal at Camp Claiborne. It is a few miles north on hey 165
that were nearby.
Worth a stop if you are crossing south central Louisiana or north and south path. 25ish miles south of Alexandria, LA just off hwy 165. Local LEOs hang out in Woodworth and Mcnairy, so.

I am not sure how much you can go in the sawmill. We were walking and the temp was climbing. Early morning but....
Instead of lots of 'keep out' signs were the 'if you are stupid and hurt yourself, it's on you' signs. Cooler less bug and snake time might be an idea. I need to go back.
