Default Lake Tahoe Riding

My friend and I are both from New England and the last 4-5 years we've gone to Las Vegas in April to play Craps, rent bikes, and ride the area. I think we've seen a lot of it at this point, and we're thinking that we'd try Lake Tahoe, instead next year. Maybe play Craps there, and also rent bikes and ride through the mountains. Looks like there's a lot of riding in the area.
Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on: First: the best time to go, (hopefully not in Summer, crowds don't work for us). Would early May be warm enough to ride comfortably in the mountains?
Also, wondering if anyone has any experience with the Harley rentals in the area. We've alway rented through Eaglerider, but I see there's an independent outfit in the Lake Tahoe area and that's also an option, although their rules seem more stringent than Eagleriders..
And last, if anyone has any thoughts on a your favorite rides in the area, that would be really helpful.

There's lots of good bike roads around Lake Tahoe, just taking a loop around the lake is spectacular. Highway 89 south to Markleeville is a great ride, as is 89 north to Greagle. Early May weather is unpredictable, could be great, but it also could be cold and snowing.

Deadhawg is right, weather in May can be unpredictable, but since you are from Massachusetts I think you'll find the weather to be mild by comparison. Just bring your leather coat and chaps and a flannel shirt and you'll be fine. Another though is to come in September, kids are back in school and most of the summer crowds are gone. I've ridden the Sierras many times in September (my buddies and I rode up to Reno for the Air Races just about every year), mornings and as the sun goes down it gets cool, but again if you are a seasoned rider not that bad. Here's another option, fly into Reno and P/U a bike from the Harley Dealer and ride up to Tahoe, maybe hit Virginia City on the way. As far as for favorite rides, just take a road map and pick any road, they're all good Brother!
