a great trip - home again
2,603 flawless miles; bike ran perfect. roads were fairly empty of tourists; never had a problem getting a room. the scenary was spectacular. most (bike) riderson the road waved
.met lots of nice people from far way places. only had about 15 - 20 miles of rain one day. averaged about 40 - 42 miles per gallon.temp gage in my oil fill read between 200 - 220 degreesevery time i checked. will post pics later. only boring part wasthe stretch from about 100 miles north ofroswell, new mexicodown to about 50 miles south of pecos,tx. i can see why the alien space ship crashed around roswell.they got so bored and fell asleep (like i nearly did - had to stopto spash water on my face). talk about desolate country. this was a riding vacation - no time for dilly dally although did take lots of pics. had 3 days of 500+ miles 2 days of 400+ miles and ride home today was a mere ~225 miles. here is a quick summary:
day 1 (sept 2): left plano,tx about 8:00 am. plan was to get to amarillo,tx but we got there earlier than planned to rode on in to tucumcari, new mexico. onesmall section of hwy 86 near tulia tx was nice. rest wastypical north texas riding.
day 2. tucumcari up to taos via scenic route 104 to las vegas, then 518 to taos. from taos, took hwy 64 over to farmington, new mexico. lots of picture stops. did loose my footing on some gravel and the bike slowly leaned over past the point of no return. luckily, my wife cushioned the fall so no damage or scratches (on the bike). what a girl!!
day3; head up to mesa verde, colorado. then over to durango. from there took hwy 550 up to montrose. this was probably the highlight of the trip. from montrose took hwy 50(?) by blue mesa lake (wow!) on over to Salida, then headed south to monte vista.
day 4. take 285 all the way down to pecos, tx. northern part of new mexico is great but from clines corner on down was flat and straight. other parts are nice but this section of 285 should be avoided. we did the the obligatory shot at the UFO museum in Roswell.
day 5. pecos down to fort davis texas, then through marfa, alpine, and marathon. all great scenic areas and nice cool temperature. from marathon took 385 up to fort stockton then I10 to junction,tx (80 mph posted speed limits). there were some nice sections on this stretch but was fairly windy and just trying not to get blown off the road. from junction, took back roads to burnet,tx. very very nice. this is actually a little north of the texas hill country but still very nice roads.
day 6. 281 up to hico, then up to hwy 67to 35 to 75 on in toplano.
bike was filthy. spent about 2 hours cleaning it up. the bike and i have formally and officially bonded. i never noticed any discomfort with thestock seat. the wife saidshe was comfortable the whole time(she does have the wider touring seat and backrest). this is a great bike (2007 heritage classic).
gw.
