Wish my wife was like that I wouldn't buy her one but would send her on many trips...
ORIGINAL: SamStone

Thanks Wecroft, I am thinking of getting my wife one. She has no sense of direction and hates interstate highways.

On all 3 of my GPS's you can tell it to avoid Hi-ways. If it dont give you this option do the shortest route option and you will not go interstate most of the time.

The better Garmin units let you plan the trip on your computer, then download the route to the GPS. Very nice method, lets you plan mileage, POI's and hotel/motels along the route.

For a really simple GPS unit you could try the hand held Garmin Etrex Legend like what I have. It allows you to pick a destination and then shows you how to get there via a (via the way the crow flys line) across the nav screen. You can get these fairly cheap (under 150 bucks) and they work great. I've used mine now for over 3 years and love it. I have a Tom Tom in my car but i don't really think i'd want that much extras on a bike GPS. This chepo gps also allows you to set the size of the area that you want to look at on the screen.. so you can zoom in and out by x amount of miles. I usually leave my view at 2 miles around me.. so I can see what is coming up. Some of the secondary streets aren't shown in this gps, but i usually don't care because the only thing i use it for is to keep me going in the general direction of where i want to get to.

Here is a pic of it mounted to my roadking via a Ram mount:
