I'm traveling to Colorado for the state HOG rally. It is a touring rally going from Golden Colorado to Glenwood Springs. There are 3 routes. I'm not picking the highway (70)route and need to decide between the other two. Anybody familiar with the other two routes? You can find them at http://www.costatehogrally.com/maps.pdf. Should be a blast.
Do NOT take the central Highway route. Honestly both of the other routes are beautiful. I am partial to the southern route through Buena Vista. Going over Independence pass is amazing. You really canât go wrong with either. Looks like you will be starting from Golden, are you going back through Golden? If so why not do both routes via round trip?
That's a tough call. I've been over both routes, and they are excellent. Of the two I prefer the southern route, over Independance Pass and through Aspen. That's the one I'd choose.
15 miles up the road from Twin Lakes is the town of Leadville. It's the highest incorporated town in the US. Last time I was there, I had lunch in a nice little diner near the Deleware hotel. Can't remember the name.
In Buena Vista, theres a small mexican restaurant two block off the highway on Main st. Very tasty. In Fairplay there's a little joint called the Brown Burro that makes some of the best chicken encheladas you've ever had. The coffee is quite good. The grill in Johnson Village is also quite good.
Don't bother with Aspen. Unless you are hoping to see some of the rich and famous. Starwood is north of town on the right.
There's a new freeway running from Aspen to Glenwood Springs. You end up just buzzing through those small towns.
The highlight of the trip will be Independance Pass. 14K+ feet above sea level. It can get quite cold up there, even in early June. But the scenery is truly spectacular. It's one of my favorite rides.
Yep. The round trip idea is sort of what I'm gonna do. Gonna go to Colorado Springs before the rally(Family). I think I'm going to do the Northern route to Glenwood. Then make a one way trip of the Aspen Poker run and just head to Beuna Vista and Ute Pass on the way to Colorado Springs again. By not going back, I'm going to miss the typical HOG rally stuff, like the bike shows, awards ceremony, the games and events, but I'm going out there to ride.
Thanks for the suggestions on what to see/eat. That was what I was hoping for.
I've seen the vids by sfarson, and am going to make some of my own while there.
Neither here nor there, but just reading the thread for the 1st time. My first Colorado experience was 2001. Sorta unplanned, on a x-country trip from Ct. to Pacific Coast Hgwy. Just thinking back to that trip and subsequent following motorcycle adventures cant see how ya can go wrong. Except for the greater Denver area, even I-70 is a scenic ride. I did ride the "southern route" in '01 starting in Idaho Springs. We rode up Mt. Evans, breakfast in Leadville, Independance Pass which was un-F'n believable, Aspen all the way into Glenwood Springs. I remember a HD dealership there. All I can say is have FUN and wish it were me.
