I've never been on the famous Route 66 as it snakes its way across much of the mid-west and west, but I've recently traveled on Route 11 as it transects the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Route 11 has much of the charm that I have heard attributed to 66 - a 1950s feel as it passed through rual settings and smalltown American and away from the furious rat race of the country's interstates.
Route 11 runs from SW Virginia on up through the Valley and crosses into W. Virginia at a point a little south of Martinsburg. While Route 11 shares space with Interstate 81 at several points along the way, mostly it parallels 81, and is a two/three lane country by-way with little traffic.
Travelling Route 11, you'll pass through quaint little towns like Buchanan and Natural Bridge and then onward to Lexington, Staunton, and Harrisonburg.
My favorite part is between Natural Bridge and Staunton. And, if you find yourself a little north of Natural Bridge near meal time, make a point of stopping at the Pink Cadallac. Poodle skirts and blue suade shoes welcome!
Now, Jez, you know we require pics. That's some beautiful country up in that area. You should ride in the mountains in WV someday. They're gorgeous. Thanks for sharing.
Sorry, 'stones. I'll try to remember a camera next trip. I ride a Deuce, and if stuff don't fit into my pockets, the stuff dont go if ya know what I mean.
Inside pocket, leather vest. Perfect place. Also good for your mp3 player. No excuses here, bro. j/k.

I live in Fredericksburg,VA and ride Route 11 whenever I get a chance, It's like riding back in time, very relaxing with a lot of little Mom and Pop diners and antique shops along the way. Great Place to ride!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be doing the Skyline Drive/ Blue Ridge Parkway in June and was planning on spending a portion of my time in Lexington, Staunton and Natural Bridge. Looks like I will need to make a point to check out Route 11...So much to see and so little time!!!
Look for the signs along Rt 11 and grab lunch at the Pink Cadillac, it's a really cool restaurant like stepping back in time to a fifties style diner. Even an old Harley sitting in the dining area.
