Thinking about a mid-winter escape, and toying with the idea of flying into Miami, renting a bike, and riding to Key West. Is that an enjoyable ride (other than the partying down there), or just a crowded route to paradise? Also, didn't know how much time to allow for a trip like that. Any suggestions appreciated.
My wife and I have done it several times and will probably do it again this year. It's a great ride, a little slow goin' at times but beautiful. I've ridden Daytona to Key West more than once so doing it in a day from Miami is no problem...About 3-4 hours from Key Largo.

It depends on the time of year. Don't go in late august, early sept., that's lobster season and it is a friggin madhouse, people dyin! I make that trip pretty regular, I got family in Cudjoe Key, about 18 miles on the Miami side of KW. Definitely hit Boondocks in Big Pine Key:
This is a very cool biker hangout with live entertainment and some kick *** grub. You'll want to check out the No Name pub and their killer pizza too, hint DON"T FEED THE KEY DEER!
I am headin down that way in February also. Probably be there the week of the 23rd sometime, then ridin up to Daytona. I am also looking for reasonable hotels in the Keys for a few nights. Keep me posted. Thanks
Well, it's not a bad ride at all from Key Largo to Key West, and as others have said, about four hours or so with a few stops. I recommend the Card Sound Road around Key Largo instead of the main highway - much more scenic and not nearly as much traffic.
Once you get through Key Largo, there is not so much stop and go traffic and it's a nice ride. Take the time to review some guidebooks to identify some places to stop and take some pictures.
I rode it last February and it was not too crowded. Nice and warm all the way from Miami to Key West - quite a change from Atlanta weather at the time!
I buried one of their boats in the shallow *** water in the bay on my honeymoon. Sucked a ton of sand into the motor. I don't know if I am allowed back there anymore LOL. Better stick to two wheels and the pavement.
I just got back from the Miami to Key west ride.It takes all day to do it comfortable.Make sure you get down early enough to go see the sunset at the square. As far as rooms we just played on the internet searching room rates. You'll love the ride.
