In season ( which February is) I don't think there are too many deals on rooms. I stay at the KOA campground on Sugarloaf key which is about 20 miles from Key West. Even Camping is about $100 a night for my truck camper. I can't wait to get back there this year. I'm from the cold Northeast, so it's a real treat to be riding in a tee shirt at 11 at night in early March. You'll love it.
Aint it the treat man? Don't get a hell of a lot better than that. You ever hit Boondocks on Big Pine?
Have gone from Palm Beach Gardens south to Key West numerous times; riding various roads, 2 up on a 1200C Sportster - no problem riding the whole way in 4 or 5 hours...
Riding through downtown Miami is unique/different... Many times we stayed overnight in the Homestead area (where Hurricane Andrew hit and devastated the area in early 1990's)... Normally we weren't in a hurry; stopped and saw so much... Can ride the outskirts of Miami too...
Beautiful ride throughout the whole area - actually near Key West riding over the Seven-Mile Bridge; riding to the Buoy which is 90 miles off the coast of Cuba (can take great pic); then onto Front Street to visit HOG'S BREATH SALON...
Do a search for them and find the live 'cam' link/shots from their bar/restaurant area...
I'm in Ft. Lauderdale and have rode down to Key West many times. I tend to stay off the hwys and take rt. 27 down, the east side of the Everglades. When you reach Florida City you can take either Card sound road, to Alabama Jacks or go directly to Key Largo. Once you hit Key Largo it's 106 miles to mile marker zero. There are plenty of places to stop but the one place I hit every time is Irish Kevins, on Duval St., they have a comic /guitar player thats a blast. Hint when he asks tell him your from New Jersey.
