Going to Cody WY prior to Sturgis. We plan on riding Beartooth highway. Any suggestions for other rides in the area. Places to stop, things to do, etc.?
Chief Joseph Highway(296) between Beartooth and Cody. Alt 14 between Cody and I-90 through the Bighorn Mountains. Custer Battlefield in Montana just North of Sheridan. Buffalo Bill Museum in Cody. Yellowstone, Grand Tetons.
Beautiful country anywhere up that way; Red Lodge is a nice little place for a stop. If you have the time the highway from Lovell, WY over the mountain back to Sheridan is a worth-while ride. At the top is a native Indian spiritual place, the Medicine Wheel. A short walk on the dirt to get to the place but is awesome. Enjoy the ride!
Beartooth Hgwy is a blast! I second the Alt. 14 route over the Bighorns east to I-90 near Sheridan. I wish I had time to do the Shell Canyon myself from Alt. 14 back down to Greybull Wyo. when I was out there.
If you have enough time around Yellowstone/Tetons , Rte. 26/287 from Moran Jct. to Dubois Wyo. heads over the Togwotee Pass and offers nice views of the Tetons, Absaroka and Wind River mtns.
I'm from that neck of the woods originally and will be doing a lot of that area this year as well. One thing to check on is they had several mudslides last year and Beartooth was closed for a long time, so it would be a good idea to double check the conditions with the DOT. Have a good one.
If your there for the weekend eat at the prime rib all you can eat at the Irma hotel.. VERY GOOD indeed, no skimpy slices of prime rib either.. Ate there last yr during vacation ride.. MOST excellent.
Definately The Irma Hotel. It's a great old hotel with great food and history. The back bar was a gift from Queen Victoria to Buffalo Bill Cody and is spectacular.
Next spend the day at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. It's five museums in one including the Cody Firearms Museum which houses the largest collection of American firearms. Thousands of antique firearms from match locks, through Gatlin Gun and forward.
At night go to the rodeo, they rodeo every night and it was very enjoyable.
