The week of May 21st I am taking my dad for a trip like yours. Headed on route 340 to Front Royal Virginia, down Skyline drive. Then taking the Blue Rige Parkway to Cherokee, NC. Hang a right and up the Smokie Mountain Foot Hill Parkway to Pigeon Forge, TN. After that no agenda or itenerary, just following the front tire for a week.
A good site to see is Luray Caverns, in VA, Dollywood in TN. There are a lot of scenic stops along the way and plenty of lodging possibilities. Good luck on your trip and if you need any help in Maryland give a call. Number is in profile.
