My wife and I are riding on two bikes from NYC. Kickstands are up at 5:30am on June 3rd to Shanadoah to Smokies and maybe Nashville if time permits.
Any suggesions on where to ride, on what to see and where to stay during our ride anywhere in the passing areas that we are riding by.
I am still debating on if I want to take 15 or 11 south to the Shanadoah. From Shanandoah I am taking BRP to Smokies and riding there for a few days and hopefully hit Nashville by the weekend.
I think anywhere you can stay on Skyline Drive is nice. I have been there 5-6 times and have not been disappointed. I usually camp, I do not know what your plans are...
Im headed down to NC June 10th for 9 days. I have my itiniary planned, and most important lodging already booked. The ROADS are numerous and beautiful, and some challenging to ride. You have time before you go, I have a couple books you NEED to buy before you go to plan out some great rides. I already picked out a few of them and highlighted routes into my NC road atlas. Anyhow, here is he books and you decide the routes: from milestone press, www.milestonepress.com the book is titled "MOTORCYCLE Adventures in the SOUTHERN APPALACHIANS"...It covers the BRP, NC highcountry and the Asheville area. Also, a nice all around book for rides is from Whitehorse Press by Dale Coyner titled "Motorcycle Journeys Through The APPALACHIANS" .(800-531-1133) Whats cool about this book is it covers ya from Gettysburgh area in PA right down to the NC/SC border into Ga. Lots of info on the BRP in Virginia . One town in Va they rave about is Lexington.
The atlas of NC is from www.adcmap.com by American Map titled the North Carolina state road atlas. Detail is unbelievable. Have fun! Maybee see ya there. I'll be staying right in Fontana Lake resort for a few days near deals gap.
For sure, one of the best rides east of the Mississippi River.
Just know that you won't beable to see and enjoy all the worthy stops. So, just enjoy the ones that you do stop at and all the rest while your riding. Get the Parkway maps at the info center at all 3 Parkways. They contain lots of info, and insight.
My wife and I have favorite stops along the way, but we've done the same trip many times and ALWAYS look forward to riding those roads again.
Take lots of pictures. Watch out for deer and if your lucky you'll see a bear or two.
Oh ya, watch for snakes (it ain't like the city us yanks are used to!! lol) especially when you stop at the sights and if you hike any of the many trails.
Check out Blowing Rock, NC. It's a small village with a cool history and has lots of little artisan shops. There's a little park on the right in the center of the Village. It's a little higher then the road (5 or 6 steps up) with shaded park benches to sit on while you eat a tasty home made Ice Cream Cone from across the street and watch the traffic go by.
Points of interest at every stop. Grandfather Montain is a must see and take the hike to the top and climb to the top of the stone tower. Bring some water with you. Mt Michell is the highest point east of the Mississippi River.
Actually, I am planning a 2 week trip in July to go to the Sydney, Nova Scotia and Owen Sound, Ontario HOG Rallies. Nothing but caming and riding for 2 weeks.... I can't wait!
This many sound like a silly question one in Maine are you going to take The CAT Ferry? ***http://www.catferry.com/*** Or are you going to ride Rt 1 all the way up to New Brunswick?

We are also planning a trip to Nova Scotia in August, we are going across on the "Cat". I was told that a week in Nova Scotia is not enough time to see it.
