chicago traffic info
riding to out west from ct. taking lake michigan ferry to avoid chicago area. returning i'll be forced to take interstate thru chicago. it will be a weekday, i hear that area is always jammed up. any tips, info, appreciated.

I would not want to be in Chi town on a weekday no how no way. Some folks drop down to I-80 and go that way. If you're headed to CT you may want to consider going back over the top through Canada from Sault Ste Marie. Beautiful scenery up that way, just gotta watch for Moose and other large critters.

You don't say how far north you'll be coming back or what interstate you'll be taking. But as stated above avoid the city at all cost. Taking Rt30 is not a good idea. Too much stop and go traffic through all the towns it runs through. You might be better off biting the bullet and take I-80 to Morris (rt 47) and hop on Rt 6. Take that to I-55 South and go through Wilmington then through Kankakee. From there find a route to cut across east to catch I-65 and then north to I-80 to head east again. I just took this route in reverse coming back from North Carolina this weekend. On I-65 I took the Roseland exit and headed west on some back roads to eventually catch I-57 and make my way west.
Traffic on I-80 between Minooka and IL/IN border is always miserable.

if your doing the trip and are stuck going near chitown. all of our highways are under construction and at night they go down to 1 lane with very little notice. I'd shoot down depending on where your coming from if its from the west on 90 then 355 to 55 then to 80. 80s not that bad if you avoid rush hour. I have other ways too but my mac is about to die so...

Good advice...avoid Chicago or you will regret your decision not to! I travel to Tennessee and Kentucky quite often and I will go west (from Milw. area) and then south through Rockford just to avoid Chicago.
