Planning on a 4000 miler from Indiana to sturgis and on to Billings, Red Lodge,Yellowstone, Tetons, Rocky mt pk and back home again.
There are 3 of us- 60+ yrs and in good health and lots of experience on bikes.
Can we do 350- 400-miles each day in the rockies and still see the sites?
Or do we need to tame it down to 200 a day?
We plan on being out 15 days and 6 of em at Deadwood- leaves us with 9 days to travel and see- 2.5 days out and 2.5 days back leaves us- 4 days to do billings, red lodge, yellowstone, teton and rky mt park.
seems way too fast for me.
What is it to Sturgis for ya...10000 miles??? That would be 2000 miles just to and from Sturgis and 2000 miles to do in 9 days. You could do 250 a day and be good, plus see more!
In the less scenic areas get on the interstate and have 400 + mile days.Take your time in the more scenic areas maybe 200 mile so you have the time to enjoy the sights. You might want to cut your stay down in Deadwood 4 or 5 days to enjoy the other places.
i'd agree on that. i've only been through deadwood but i can't imagine spending too much time there with all the other sights to see.
unless you have something specific to do there.
still sounds like a good trip though. have fun
When do you plan on being in Deadwood and where are you staying? I'm in a group that are going there as well. Arrive Aug. 1st. Staying til the 5th. Then heading to Rocky Mtn Ntn. Park as well.
the rally starts on the 3rd of aug- we arrive on the 31st. leave on the 6th. have to stay and watch the flat trk races and ride the hwys- we trailered out last yr- and put 2000 miles on em. we will ride 1000 while at deadwood- deadwood is just home for a few days-a bed and food.
One of our party just put too much into it and I have cut it back a bit after leaving sturgis- no Montana and shortened the yellowstone to just the short inner loop and down to Jackson.
I agree- a day for sight seeing- 200 + miles is all ya want or need- otherwise- 400 is okay-
we will do 600 +/- the 1st day and stay in ft dodge, ia. head to Winner s.d for the 2nd night. 260 miles to deadwood.
Thanks for the tips- maybe we will see ya there- we will be the guys on motorcycles. LOL
Trailering motorcycles is an illness.

200 miles per day? On a bicycle, maybe...
When I am traveling, I average 900 miles per day with 1,200 miles per day being my comfortable upper range. But, I'm on a Sportster.
350-400 miles is easily doable by anyone in reasonable condition with a reasonable appreciation for the requirements of doing so.
Just remember, maintain the bike(s), maintain the rider(s) and don't run out of gas.
I aim for 400-450 per day at leisure. I like to sight see, tak stops at the tourists traps. I get our by 9AM or so and like to stop by 5PM or so. But that's just me. Could probably push 800 or so if I wanted to, I just have never had the need and I like taking my time.
I think you will be rushing it to do that in four days. Its a good days ride from spearfish to red lodge (via billings). The Beartooth you want to enjoy the ride and if you go into the northeast gate at yellowstone there is construction that will slow you down getting into the park. I think you need at least 2 days to get around yellowstone. It will be another days ride to make it from the tetons to RMP. Its doable but I don't know how you would enjoy it. I would cut out the Rocky national park out spend 2 days in Yellowstone. Then take 3 days coming home. Just my .02
