Default Need some road trip ideas!

We live 55 miles north of Chicago and we're looking for a good place for riding and things to do. Don't want to go any further then 6 or 7 hours from home seeing it's only a 3 day trip.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Have you thought about going east to the Mississippi river valley? You can ride along the river, maybe Dubuque to LaCrosse on the WI side. There are a lot of good motorcycle roads in SW Wisconsin (Coulée Country). When you say "things to do" do you want to make it an overnight trip? Do you want to camp or stay in a hotel?

We're planning on staying in a hotel/cabin for three nights. As for things to do. . . good places to eat, local atractions, etc.

Thanks!

I think you want to ride west though to get to the Mississippi River valley. Anyway, here's a few specifics places to go along with the previous poster's ideas.

You could go to Mindoro, WI and have lunch at Top Dawgs. They have 108 burgers on their menu. Some of them are quite good. Take Hwy 108 there from West Salem. Although it's only about 10 miles total, it's a fun and scenic road. I believe there are YouTube videos of it on a bike.

Maybe an hour south of LaCrosse there's a place called The Great American Roadhouse. It's south of Stoddard on Hwy 35 (aka. Great River Rd.). The highway follows the Mississippi and the pizza at the Roadhouse is very good.

On Sundays the Rockton Bar & Grill (in Rockton, WI) has a chicken BBQ. You need to call ahead for "reservations". The food is typical field day grilled chicken, but it's a popular biker destination. They reportedly serve over 400 bikers each Sunday. The roads there and back are fun, but watch for the Amish buggies. On your way back take Hwy 33 out of Ontario towards Hillsboro and stop at a place called The Bullpen. It's a nice little bar in a barn. That will also take you through Wildcat Mountain State Park, which is a mini version of the ride on Hwy 108.

Default Good Ride

I live west of Milwaukee which can't be far from you. I just departed today for a trip around lake Michigan going through Michigan first. I know Door County is beautiful and might make a good ride although I would recommend staying overnight if possible. I also agree that SW Wisconsin is excellent so I have heard. I have that one planned later this year. Wisconsin has some great roads through the Kettle Moraine both north and south of Milwaukee.

Try this site with the Wisconsin "Rustic Roads" program. It will probably give you some great

ideas.http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/travel/scenic/maps.htm

Also, try Eagle, WI and go to Knuckleheads bar and grill. This is a big biker destination with good food and drink.

Hope this helps!

Duh! I have been living in MN for too long I guess, I was thinking of WI as being east of here.

Tripwire - all you suggestions are good ones. I cant believe I didn't think of Mindoro. The last time I was on that road it was getting a little rough but still a lot of fun.

Come on up to northern Wisconsin to the Hayward-Cable area. We have the air conditioning on and today's high was around 60 degrees. I actually lit a wood fire tonight to warm the hacienda. the weather is supposed to moderate over the weekend and we should be seeing mid 70's and low 80's early next week. There's not much for humidity up here and it is comfortable riding. There are a lot of great roads up here and you can run up to Lake Superior and cruise parts of that. There are lots of motels and resorts in the region.

The roads along the Mississippi North of Lacrosse WI and on the west side, Winona Minnesota are a great ride. Was just there a few weekends ago on my way back from out west in Wyoming back to Michigan. I stayed in the Holiday Inn in Winona, nice restaurant and could walk to room. The bluffs above the town along the river were beautiful.
