I'm off from work next week and looking for some good riding/entertainment. I plan to spend 4-5 days total departing from eastern PA (~1 hour north of Phila)...going solo.
I thought about heading south to chase the sunshine and warmer temps. The 2009 monsoon season in the NE really put a damper on riding this season.
I like to ride especially in rural open spaces, with good riding/road conditions, hills and scenery. Also, wouldn't mind a town for a base location...some place with good bars/restaurants and friendly, outgoing women. Am I asking too much??!!
I know about bike week in OC, Maryland next week, but I want to ride/see something new vs. standing around drinking all day. I did Skyline Drive down into VA two years ago.
i don't know how far away from home you wanna get, but if you point it south and go to front royal va, that's where the shenandoah skyline parkway starts and runs about 110 miles into the blue ridge parkway. it's an awesome ride with lots of gorgeous scenery and lots of little "what america's all about" towns just off the parkway. there's no better place in the world to ride in my personal opinion, and it's not that far from philly. if you've never done it, you can trust me, you won't regret it. enjoy your ride.
I live upstate, in Wellsboro. From where are you leaving? Go up to route 6 & head west. Great riding all the way to OH. I can give you lots of stuff to see along the way --- off of 6. PA Grand Canyon, Kinzua Dam, Benezette PA has the largest herd of free-roaming elk east of Colorado, stuff like that. Don't know which direction you're headed, or where you are. I'm an outside sales rep, covering the whole state of PA, so I probably know some good rides, from where you are. You can make Wellsboro a "base location". I live here, but can leave for a ride, and come back with 250 to 300 miles on the bike. Nice rides up in upstate NY too. Bring your DOT helmet!
I was told that US 6 ( the Army if the Republic Highway ) across the northern part of the state is a beauty. Haven't made the trip myself but plan to do so in October. Am told to stop in Wellsboro and eat at the diner, stop in Coulton Point and look around and to take in the Kinsua Valley overlook qouted as the Grand Canyon of PA. Should be some great views near the collapsed Kinsua bridge that time of the year.
I use to live in Philly...I suggest the same...follow rt 6 west (Grand Canyon)to Lake Erie, head south (your choice) west of Pittsburgh or east of Pittsburgh..Hop on Historic RT 30...or take a side trip up to Cresson, Gallitizin, Horseshoe curve (trains)...Or go to Shanksville and stop by United 93 memorial..., plenty of mom and pop (US owned..motels, diners and bars along that route)
If you head to Front Royal VA, continue west on Rt. 55 to Mooresfield WV and continue to Seneca Rocks. Follow Rt 33 east over the mountain to Harrisonburg VA. You won't be disappointed.
