Default Adirondacks, NY or Shenandoah, VA ??

Looking to take a bike ride for my 27th birthday in May. Cant decide if I wanna go to the Adirondacks or Shenandoah. Look for help on routes and thoughts. I'm leaving from Lancaster, PA and have a three day weekend.

Any recommended unique routes, stops, shops and or bars I should hit up??

This is my first long trip on my bike, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Thanks In Advance For All Help!
Justin

Talking NY or VA

Three days doesn't give you enough time to really enjoy either area. I've gone up to the Adirondacks (Lake George) for 15 years and can always find new areas to ride. It's fantastic up there. You're probably a little closer to the Shenandoah area, so you won't use too much of your time getting to the area. Route 55 runs from Gainesville Va out to Front Royal and then out to West Virginia. In WV, you can pick up Route 33 and head back into VA via Harrisonburg. You won't be disappointed. Skyline Drive is nice, but you may run into traffic and there is an admission fee ($10) I think. Routes 340, 522, and 211 are good rides.

Both are good. Ride one soon & save the other for later. Or better -- save 2: ewhinger is right about WV if you like turns that don't finish turning.
I live in the Adirondacks, just outside of Lake Placid, & can say we've got good mountain roads, hotels everywhere, good food & too many tourists.
PA roads are easiest, Adk in # 2, & WV most like a carnival ride.

Thanks for the input guys.
I spent about 2.5 hours staring at maps online and this is what I came up with as of now:
Head into Maryland and jumping on 340 towards Harper's Ferry for lunch or dinner (the girlfriend mentioned something about leaving Thursday evening). Continue to Front Royal for the night. (Ends up being about 3 hours and 110 miles)
Wake up at a decent hour the next morning and riding down Skyline Drive to Shenandoah Harley Davidson (that's 4 hours and 124 miles).

That's where I stand as of now. I will work on the return route later.

HOLLOWPOINT,
I HAVE BEEN BACKPACKING IN THE ADIRONDACKS BEFORE, I LOVE IT UP THERE. MY BUDDIES AND I ARE HEADED UP YOUR WAY FOR LABOR DAY WEEKEND. WE ALWAYS STAY IN LAKE PLACID ONE OF THE NIGHTS AND HIT UP THE LOCAL BREWERIES. DEFINITELY TAKING THE BIKE UP THERE AT SOME POINT.

A couple things I'm taking into consideration here. You're 27 with a girlfriend along. 3 days. May. Wonderin what kind of bike you're on.
And you probably want to make this fun so she'll want to go again.
If she ain't happy you won't be. I got some experience there .

You could run down Skyline Dr. It's slow and you will get bored, but
a very nice relaxing run. Cut over to Virginia Beach, your lady will
love it. Hotel on the beach, nice boardwalk, some night life.

On the way back hit the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. A little farther North
you could cut over and ride the coast between Ocean City and
Rehoboth Beach.

That would give you a variety of scenery and activities, with a little
Interstate mixed in to make up some time.

Have fun, I've enjoyed all those areas before, so did the wife .

Jim

(By the way I enjoyed your neck of the woods also)

Are routes 522 and 211 four lane highways? I noticed on my maps their calling them "highways."

I was thinking about taking 340/N (from Elkton) to 211/E and then 522/N up to Front Royal on our way home.

The girlfriend is looking forward to this ride as much as I am. She likes the outdoors and we have been on some pretty decent day rides.
I have faith that she will hang in there.

I'm having troubles locating route 6 on the map. What towns does it cut through?

Thanks for the input!
