Everyone's got the best ones pretty well pegged. Try an internet search for "good motorcycle roads in south dakota"... something like that. You'll probably come up with info and maps for all of these.
I'll second the motion on the Badlands State Park loop, the Needles highway, and the Spearfish Canyon loop. Took all those plus a run out to Devil's Tower on day-rides while in Sturgis this summer. Great roads, even when crowded with bikes like they are during Bike Week.
I am definitely making this trip in the near future as well. Has anyone here used this guidebook before? http://www.sturgisrallysite.com/
my hubby bought it last year. in all honesty, about half of it was totally useless - just for fun profiles of bikers. but there was a lot of good info as well in the other half. rides, suggestions, campground info, etc. if its your first time going, i'd say its worth the 20 bucks, we definitely used it every day.
we had the most fun doing crazyhorse, custer state park, and iron mountain road.
badlands and wall drug were a close second.
One would really like the Badlands better by doing them first. Very impressive coming from a non scenery state. Spearfish Canyon road is great, but Iron Mountain Road was my favorite. Do it in both directions and you will have two different unique experiences, Needles highway is almost like being on another planet. Custer State Park animal loop is cool, just be prepared to stop often.
if you come from the south on iron mtn rd you can se rushmore.on hwy 85 were it splits by deadwood take it into wy lotsa curves.then you can go all the way to the south end of the hills and ride through custer coming from the south.but like most have said ride them all you wont be disapointed.
Not much to add to what has been posted. Really enjoyed Devils Tower and the Spearfish Canyone. Loved the Badlands, would like to do it a second time, this time at night in a full moon. Can`t miss Mt Rushmore and Crazy Horse.
Whatever, the roads around there are good, watch out for the deer jumping out of the woods when riding in thunderstorms.......
dont forget iron mountain rd and the pigtail bridges, thats my favorite road, ride it every morning when i'm there in august before it gets busy...usually do the loop thru custer and back to the needles hwy then out to hill city for breakfast
+1. Iron MT Rd; you can see Mt Rushmore from it, and will save ya a few bucks not going to the memorial. The Super 8 in Hill City is a great place to stay. Also the Badlands is a must see.
