We are heading out at the end of June to ride the Black Hills.
Kinda want to do the rides before we head there for the 75th anniversary and while the traffic will hopefully be lighter than during rally time.
I'm hoping you guys (and gals) will chime in with the "best" town to base out of-Lead, Spearfish, Deadwood, ???
We'd like to ride all day then relax with a few drink in the evening so which town has decent nightlife?? Not crazy *** partying but cool pubs, etc.
I've talked to a couple guys that have said to run certain roads in a certain direction but they can't remember which way was the better way. I'd take input on that as well. We're planning on being there 4-5 days.
Hill City should be your base. In the middle of everything. A beautiful 45 minute ride to Deadwood. Decent food and a couple places to hang. 15 minutes to Mount Rushmore. Needles Hwy and Iron Mountain Rd. are close by and 2 of the better rides in the Hills. If I can find the map I'll post it up. I get up there 2 times a year as I have relatives in Hill City and will be there in June myself.
I stayed in Deadwood this year shared motel room at the "Gem" they cater for bikers undercover parking if your back early and a wash down area, they have a quite bar for a relaxing ale or two, depends on your budget ? enjoyed the ride into Sturgis on two days, went on a day trip out to Sundance and Devils tower, great ride and a must see while your out there. Good luck this year.

Custer is a nice town, and is close to Crazy Horse Monument, Custer State Park, and Rushmore. It's only about 45 minutes to Rapid City and an hour from Sturgis. The ride from Custer to Rapid City is very nice. I recommend the Bavarian Inn in Custer.
I agree Hill City is a good place to base but I prefer Deadwood. The bars are fun, the accommodations are reasonable (except for the first week in Aug. ) and after a long day's ride you can walk or take the trolley anywhere in Town, however people who's stayed in Hill City please post your thoughts because my Wife and I might consider staying there this year.
In my opinion you're heading up at the best time if your quest is to ride however to experience a taste of Sturgis without the crowds and hassles, the best time is the last two weeks in July.
At that time a lot of the vendors are setup and every year the "pre-Sturgis" is getting bigger and bigger.
That being said the Wife and I will be there June 25-July 2. We're lucky that my in-laws have a vacation home near Sheridan Lake so we have a nice place to stay, however the weekend we are there we will likely be staying at Cadillac Jacks in Deadwood.
