Default Phoenix in January

Going to be in Phoenix on business the second week of January, likely going to take a few days personal time, rent a bike and do some touring around the area. Couple questions:
- what is the weather usually like in January for riding around Phoenix;
- what are the good rides that can be done in day trips, or two days max trips; and
- for the day trips are there significant elevation changes that will create temperature problems or that I should be aware of in the planningÉ

Any advice from those in the know is appreciated - wife and I will likely rent a bike each when we are there, probably through HOG.

You should see temps in the upper 50's and lower 60's in January.

It gets cooler quick once the sun goes down.

We usually (but not always) ride south from Phoenix during the winter to stay at lower elevations and warmer temps. This includes places like Tucson and Tombstone.

Some good shorter day rides out of Phoenix are Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake/Tortilla Flat, Lake Havasu (London Bridge) and Globe/Roosevelt Lake.

You will often run into snow at about 5,000 feet, which can rule out places like Flagstaff, Prescott, Jerome, Sedona, Oak Creek canyon, Payson and Show Low - all places we normally go in the warmer months.

Hi Al,

Bisbee is a neat place to visit, but it's high desert and gets snow too.

Well, wasn't that just a blast. Can't say enough good things about the riding and people around Phoenix, and thanks for the info to help do the planning. First day we went up through the Tonto Forest to the Tonto Natural Bridge, second day was south through Tombstone, over to Nogales and back to Phoenix, and third day was to Torilla Flats. Great riding all around, temp was in the low to mid 70's, and the sun was shining. Put on just a touch under 800 miles over the 3 days . Doesn't get much better than that.

And I need to add, the HOG Fly and Ride program worked flawlessly, no surprises, my bike and my wifes bike were exactly as promised, prices exactly as agreed (and they were good), no add ons, and the dealer doing the rental (Chesters in Mesa Az) was extremely good to deal with, pleasant, helpful and just all around great - would highly recommend dealing with them anytime.

I'd say your timing was perfect. This last week has been a wet mess.

Glad to hear everything went as planned and you enjoyed the trip.
