Usually I'm the king of cheap hotels, but in Key West I wouldn't stay anywhere but Pier House. Very expensive, ridiculously great food, topless beach, the best mohitos in town, 1 block from Mallory Square, and right in the middle of everything. The address says it all: One Duvall Street.
Right now the Pier house is about $395 incl tax. I stayed there last year on a special deal for $230. It's a great place. Good parking well lighted. Perfect location on Duval at the end of the street. No way I'd pay $400 though. This year I'll skip KW. I may visit some of the keys, but I'll stay in the Pompano Ft Lauderdale area and ride from there for a few days. I got a really nice place on the beach for $169.
I've ridden the keys for 30 years...My 2 cents...Stay in Islamorada...it's halfway there, cheaper, great bars, great people, and a nice ride to key west and back.
I think the room pricing variations at the Pier House and other accommodations has more to do with time of year and local events than economy. I was able to stay a the Pier House in july for less than $200 a night with advance res. Great place to stay. A couple of tips. Get back to your room before closing time. I was told by a few locals of drunk tourists getting mugged in the wee Hrs. Also,If it looks like a strong thunderstorm is moving in,make sure your bike is is on the highest ground you can find on an island. Apparently the Storm sewers cannot keep up. There was 2 ft of water in Duval street for 45mins. or so after rain stopped. From the sandbagging done in the shop owner doorways,it must be a common occurance.
we stayed at the "douglas house" last feb.i think about 2 bills a night.less than half a block from duval st.it was ok ,clean but tired.needs some upgrading.the only negative thing is no cancellation policy. they tap your credit card the minute you give them your number.last year i got the bill before we left ontario.probably most places do the same down there. norm
Just got back from a little ride down there. If your looking for a good clean cheap place to stay in KW, you should check out Oliva by Duval. Me and my wife got the "Cuddy Room" earlier this month and got it for about $100.00 a night. It was very small but it was clean and right on Duval street.
