IN 56 from Larwenceburg along the river is great to Madison. You can stay on 56 west of Madison and head west through the Hoosier National Forest. It's all good on any of the state roads. Brown County, the Bloomington area is nice along with the French Lick area as mentioned earlier. Watch for deer if riding at dawn or dusk.
If you're looking for a route to get through Michigan to Indiana, I'd recommend taking 12. If you're feeling adventurous you can even take it through Detroit rather than catching it in Ypsilanti. Although, with the way people drive on 94, taking 12 through the city may be the safer route. The road is usually pretty full of bikes and there's a good dealer on the corner of 12 and 127 in case you need something.
Let me tell you some good roads, I've been on a bunch here.
First of all, there aren't many roads north of Indianapolis worth riding unless you want straight, corn field roads. You need to head south of Indy. These are some of the best roads southern Indiana has to offer and some are very twisty and scenic.
Route 43 between Spencer (southwest of Indy) and route 54 is great! Once you get there, head over to Bedford and jump on 450. Take 450 to 150 at Shoals. Take 150 to 56 which takes you to French Lick (home of a casino and the West Baden Springs Hotel a must see). From there head south on 145 and 37 to Tell City. Follow 66 east along the Ohio River until you get to 62, then head east on 62 to Leavenworth (eat at The Dock Restaurant). Continue on 62 to Corydon and turn north on 135 to Salem. At Salem take 56 east to Madison. Continue on 56 to Vevay, then get on 156 to ride along the Ohio River again to you get back to 56 right before Rising Sun. Then continue on 56 to Aurora. Route 50 west to Brownstown. Just past Brownstown head north on 135 again to Story (neat place to stop and eat), then head in to Nashville (another neat town to stop and shop).
You can ride along Lake Michigan. The road has various numbers and off shoots. Quite pretty. Great burger place in New Buffalo. But go see my alma mater: Notre Dame. Beautiful campus , not as large as you might guess. See the Gold Dome and Basilica and you have to visit the Grotto for a moving experience. Great pizza just south of campus at Rocco's
