First of all let me thank you for serving our country and giving me the freedom to ride my Harley without fear of any piece of **** terrorists trying to kill me and my family, I mean that from the bottom of my heart. Secondly, I dont know when you are coming back from that Hellhole, but if it's after April 30th I will be able to give you a report on the area as I am riding down there from Connecticut the last week of April for only 4 days, but I WILL be doing some riding in the hills. Now some help from my brothers out there who have rode in this area before. I'm picking my wife up in Atlanta (she's flying ) we plan on going to Dalonega, then Suches, then Helen, then up to Dillard. After that where are the nicer roads? Toward Cherokee N.C. or west toward Chattanooga T.N.?
Well if you backtrack from Dillard to Clayton take War Woman Road over the 28 then left to Highlands. This is a great local road. Haven't ridden it in a few years so can't attest to the condition. 28 is great from there all the way to Deal's Gap but if you're heading to Cherokee you can take 441 from Franklin there or you can make the loop through Deals and the Foothills Parkway to Townsend and then around through the park to Cherokee.
Jusy a word of caution, watch for gravel/salt on the roads. We have had a fair amount of snow this winter and the roads are covered with this stuff. It's going to be sunny and almost warm this weekend so ride aware and safely. I live in Ellijay and love riding the surrounding roads. Saturday H-D of Cartersville is having a b'fast from 9 til ?
Thanks for the feedback Crountre and Windy Rich. Im definitly going to check out War Woman rd and head to Clayton. Maybe do it in reverse from Helen. Tell me Windy Rich. are the rds near you really scenic or should I head into North Carolina?
I would stay away from Helen on the weekends. Trust me you will be setting in traffic and wishing you were riding on any of the great roads around N.GA. Helen was at one time a great little town but it has been discovered and half of Atlanta is there on nice weekends. Sorry to pop your wifes bubble but there are getting to be to many people there. You notice I said Helen can suck, if you can catch it on a day, maybe weekday, when it is not packed it is a pretty cool place to hang out for a little while. It has a couple of leather shops, ok places to eat nothing special, but good beer.
Take out bin laden and come on home.
Once you make Dillard then War Woman Rd to Highlands.. I believe 64 from Highlands to Franklin then take 28 to Deals Gap.. 129 from Deals Gap to Robbinsville, NC, then Cherohala Skyway, hwy 143nc/165tn to Tellico Tn.. hwy 68 to Blue Ridge Ga. then hwy 76/5 to Atl..Been there, done that, would do it again....
