Default Helen Georgia

So i'm sitting here and my wife sends me an email saying she wants to ride the bike to Helen, GA when i get back from Afghanistan. It's only about 3 hours across the mountains from my house but such a short trip gives me plenty of time to stop and see the sights. I've made much longer trips (North GA to Daytona) in one day so the distance isnt a problem. I just wanna get some ideas on what to stop and see if anyone here has been there before.

It's just a great ride thru the mountains of North Ga... Daholonga(sp) has a nice square in town with a couple of interesting places to eat.. worth a stop and walk.. N. Ga has good riding just about any direction you can go.. If you have the time try to make it to Dillard, Ga. NE of Helen.. Nice restaurant and a place to stay at Dillard House if you want an overnighter..

I can't wait to move back up there. My wife and I still own a house in Cohutta, Ga but are down here in SW Florida for her schooling. Only about 1 more year and I'll be able to ride some of those wonderful roads again!! Can't wait. Going from Dalton to Helen in any direction is a fun ride, since you HAVE to go over the mountains. Just go and enjoy it!!

I haven't been to Helen on the bike, but my wife and I LOVE that little town. It's in a beautiful area. We love tubing on the river there. The first time we went, we stayed in a shitty hotel in Cornelia. the second time, we stayed on a campsite right outside Helen and enjoyed that much more.

Pretty much any road up there is nice. North of Helen take a right and go out past Unicoi State Park and up around the west side of Lake Burton toward Dillard; or take a left and go over toward Vogel State Park and then ride 180 (Wolf Pen Gap) over to Suches. No joke; any road is a good road up there.

Helen isn't what it used to be and is now kind a more a tourist trap than the quaint little swiss alpine village it used to be and can be VERY crowded some weekends. It is worth checking out for an afternoon trip if you've never been there though. However, if you have extra time, another really really nice town that another poster mentioned before is Dahlonega. Classic little town with the classic southern style downtown town square. An awesome place to eat there called "The Smith House" You sit down at a table with other folks and they bring out plates and piles of food for you to eat country style. I've been going there for 40 years and never had a bad meal. A really cool ride is to take Hwy 19/60 out of Dahlonega and go up to Suches "the valley above the clouds" Make sure your brakes are working well before you go.....lol

Enjoy,

Christian
