Looks like my wife and I and some other friends are going to ride North Carolina's Outer Banks this summer.
Has any of you ridden them. I guess we are going to start at the southern point and Island Hop our way north. Can anyone here give some information about them?
IT IS BEAUTIFUL...You can go to Moorehead citi and then to Cedar island and take the ferry ride to Ocrakoke island then up HWY 12 towards nags head...You can do it the other way...not sure where you are staying...Be prepared to see really flat land....I am about 3 hours from Nags head...On you way back home go through the NC mountains or through WV and KY mountains....BTW..the ferry ride is about 2 hours so plan to leave early and make a reservation...Ocracoke is i hear beautiful...One of my employees goes there once a year....
I live 1 hour away, Outer Banks Bike week is April 18 thru 25th. Ocrakoke Island is Beautiful, from there you will also have to take 45 min. ferry ride to Hatteras island than Hwy 12 to Nags Head, Kitty hawk etc. Its kinda spread out, but well worth the ride and plenty of nice restuarants to eat.
Hope the weather will be good for you, being close to the gulf stream, the weather can change quickly, so be prepared, The last 2 OBX bike weeks the weather was Great.
The OBX is beautiful unless you live here. Any one get in trouble down this way can feel free to give me a shout. Believe what everyone says about the traffic. In the summers it sucks and really is downright dangerous. Friday thru Sunday be patient and be very aware of the tourons. If you're running down here on a weekend, head south early mornings and north in the afternoons and you'll miss a lot of the rental turnover traffic jams. The weather does change quick and besides the sunscreen bring bug spray. Quite a few places you'd be glad to have it.
There's sand frequently on the beach road up through Kitty hawk and Kill Devil Hills. Most always sand down at Hatteras and Nags Head. The run over the bridge to Manteo run is nice. The ride to Corolla is very nice once you make it through Southern Shores and Duck. The ferry ride over from Okracoke Island is awesome.
7 more days and we leave. We are going to take it easy and take our time about getting there. We leave Washington, MO and head towards Nashville, TN and then Maggie Valley, NC. We are going to visit the Wheels of Time Museum while we are there. Then we we head east. We will ferry over to Orcacoke Island and then start our journey up the islands. We will go as far as we can and see if we can check out the Wild Horses on Currituck Island. Then we will backtrack to Kitty Hawk in order to get over to Virgina to start our journey home. I'm really looking forward to this.
