Hi guys and gals.
A buddy and myself are thinking about doing a riding/fishing trip to southern or central Minnesota.
We would want to rent a cabin, boat, and fishing gear once we arive so we dont have to pack a bunch of crap on the bikes.
Some place beer friendly would be a bonus.
If anyone from that neck of the woods has any recommendations we would be greatful.
Look around the Alexandria area. Great lakes and fishing up that way. The small towns are beer and bike friendly. As far as resorts go in that area, well it depends on how much you want to spend. There are you big money resorts and your small mom&pop places.
Your smaller towns and smaller lakes will have cheaper places that are pretty decent.
There is a huge chain of lakes around the city of Alexandria that have many good resorts with great fishing on any of the lakes all accessable by boat. It might cost a bit more to stay on the chain, but well worth it if you have ADD and get bored on one lake all day like I do.
Most places a boat comes with the cabin rental. But if you want a motor that is extra. I have not heard of a place that rents fishing equipment though, We pack some terminal tackle, and a reel based on what we are going to primarily fish for, then hit a Wally world and get a cheap fishing rod. It gets donated to the resort when we leave, they use it for kids to fish off the dock with.
Another option if you only plan on fishing one day is get a guide for a half or full day, then they supply everything.
Highway 75/60 out of Sioux City. And 71 in MN is a great route up north. The bugs can get thick but the deer at early and last light are worse!
Consider going a little farther north to the Walker, MN area. Great fishing on Leech Lake. This is one my daughter got last August up there. Lots of really nice resorts. Depending on how fancy you want, some have indoor pools. Here is a link to a site where you can get info on dozens of area resorts. http://leechlake.org/index.htm
I'm biased but to me the best fishing is on Mille Lacs. I kind of guide but have a friend who is serious & makes his living at it. The also are a number of launches (big party or charter boats) where every thing is also furnished as it is with most guides.
To me Minnesota is about woods and lakes. Mille lacs is about as far south as you can be and still have it feel like woods vs agricultural land.
A couple of roads that a musts are Hghway 61 going up the north shore from Duluth. MN #1 from Ilgen City, on 61, into Ely. The Range (iron / taconite mining) is something to see. MN 38 out of Grand Rapids twists and turns through heavy woods and dodges lakes. The Lost 40 Scienitific and Natural Area is a 112 acre area that was miss marked and never logged. Old growth Red and White pines. A side trip that I have never made but really want to.
Feel free to PM me if any of this catches your eye.
