This sound good, It seems that because of the higher altitude the less octane is needed and better gas mileage. I think I'm going to bring a few bottles of boost with me just in case.
I like old mom&pop stuff when riding but only buy gas at newer stations that have a going customer base. Old stations can mean old gas, old rusty tanks allowing seepage of water/mud.
Bring along the octane boost if it makes you feel better, but it won't help "bad" gas.
I hate the gas around Las Vegas, SHELL(premiem) is the only gas that don't ping for me,Ive been told that Rebel 100 octain is good but the price reflects it,and I have a Big bore 95ci camed and the bike PINGS on low octaine....It just does....I am planning a ride to Seattle soon and I often wondered about the octaine boost,too...maybe I'll through some in my baggs...?
Last year I ran into bad gas at alittle gas station off 90 about 150 miles east of rapid city I lost power real bad I was pulling a trialer behind my bike and I thought there was something realy wrong with the bike . I struggled thru the next 80 miles couldnt get over 65 mph got gas at a new gas station and problem went away. I will never go into a old out of the way gas station again.
Higher oct pump gas does one thing and one thing only. It decreases the chance of detination or ping. It does not and I mean, DOES NOT increase performance and fuel economy. It will actually decrease it. You can reduce ping or detination by increasing rpms or letting it rev more before shifting.
This had to do with normal pump gas only. Just because the oct rating is higher does not mean it is race fuel. Av fuel is not recomended.
I just returned from the west and did experience some ( bad gas) at one stop. had to use the octane booster but didnt really help a lot. I also found that my bike would not run well as all on the lower octane gas out west and in the higher elevations, ( 13,000 feet) or so. Im from NC and ride an 09 Ultra. i suggest you take some booster with you. Highest Octane I found out there was 90.
