both, on the road you just can't beleive the difference they make together. Wind and noise beat you up on a trip. Earplugs--- I don't hit the road without them. They filter out the wind noise and you actully hear better!
if you can afford it, +1 for both. invest in a good ff it will make a big difference. I don't know what kind of bike ur riding but on my fatbob the hd wind shield gave me lots of problems to figure out the buffeting issue, but I think it's just the fatbob shield that had that issue, anyways the point i'm trying to make is get it on your bike well before ur trip so u can adjust it. have fun and take pics. safe riding
We live in a high wind area that also has quarries all over the county. The windshield is great for reducing rider fatigue, keeps the rocks, wood and BIG bugs and bees off. The full face STILL gets an occasional LARGE rock-and the biggest plus is there is no windburn. We use modulars so we can pull them up easily at gas stations, stops etc. They are vented which lets the wind swirl inside if you open them and also the visors can be cracked open if you want. Really cuts the wind noise and and wind drag when down all the way. as long as you are moving-you you'll be cool. Get a white helmet. Reflects heat away. I never thought I would get so attached to ff, but now I wouldn't have it any other way. Don't go cheap either-the better ones can tolerate more adjustments like having them up and hoe much is you brain worth to you?
I vote windshield also. I just started riding 5 or 6 years ago. 1st cruiser was a V Star 1100 --- no windshield. I was so tired at the end of a long day, I had to go right to bed as soon as I got home! Windshield was a huge help. Keeps the wind from poundin' ya in the chest all day. I'll never ride without one again.

My qr on the wideglide really buffeted over 55 or so. I made some little brackets to kick the bottom of the shield out 2" and eliminated it all together. Then I bought a National Cycle 2 up shield. Far better coverage, absolutely no buffeting. The hd qr shields are better than nothing, but do not compare in the slightest to the National cycle shields. Ask me, I know, been there done that.
