I'm thinking of taking off around the 5th for Colorado on my bike and do some flyfishing once I get there, I've done this a couple of times before, makes for a great trip, ride till I find a river that looks good, usually got a destination in mind when I do this, find one of the little state camping parks, set up camp then fish, stay couple of days if its good, if not then move on. Plus its nice to get away from the heat here in SW Oklahoma for awhile. Would be great to have a friend to do this with, my fly fishing partner doesn't ride and none of my riding partners flyfish so always end up doing this alone, but even alone its great, good get away time and see some awesome country.
i tried this in 01.on my trip of a life time.did end up spending a couple days fishing in mont.also spent a day fishing pactola and a couple little ponds up spearfish canyon before sturgis.what do you fly fish for in oklahoma.id like to try fly fishing in some rivers around home but just never find time.
The only thing as addictive as riding is fly fishing. If you ever get down to Louisiana, there's some nice little rivers and bayous to fish for bass and brim. Let me know if you get down this way. Fred
Agree fully about the comment about fly fishing being addictive. A really awesome river to fish in Colorado is a section of the So. Platte river between Spinney and Eleven Mile reservoirs. To get there take 24 west out of Co. Springs. Go past Flourissant I think it is and there is a left turn. A map would help. Bring some bead head pheasant tails, Copper Johns, maybe a couple dry flies. We have some great water in New Mexico too. Enjoy!
From: Dallas, TX & Santa Fe, NM when I can find the time....
I'm an avid fisher-woman. My fishin' has suffered tremendously though because of my latest passion, my Harley! I have fished a lot in CO...Deckers, 11-mile canyon, Cheesman Canyon, South Park, Roaring Fork, Frying Pan, S Platte, Arkansas River, etc....around Breckenridge, Colo Springs and Aspen as my folks had a place in either Breck or C.S. for years. Last 5 years, I've mainly fished around Santa Fe NM since I now have a (small) place there. The Pecos was very good to me year before last. I don't think I fished once last year...sure did ride a lot though!
I'm nuts about fly-fishing. I always say riding and fly fishing are similar...relaxing as all get-out while at the same time, they're both intense and demand your total concentration. You gotta focus on what you're doing, making it next to impossible to think of anything other than what you're doing at that moment. Something can be on my mind and after a ride or a day of fishing, I realize my mind was almost blank...it's amazing how relaxing that can be.
My hobbies/obsessions aren't conducive to living in Dallas TX that's for sure!
But I must confess, I caught my first brown trout on a Mickey Finn I tied when I was about 12. Since then I've caught lots of rainbows, brook trout, and a few of those chunky warm water fish (largemouth). I should wave the long rod around and see if I can hook up on the stripers along the coast here.
I know what you mean. Only one of my riding buddies fly fishes and none of my fishing buddies ride. Anyway, I am envious. Here in Las Vegas not much to fly fish for have to go north to Ely. Always wanted to go to Co. So let us know how you did and post some pics.
