Hi all,
I am thinking about taking a short trip up the North Shore out of Duluth to Thunder Bay and back through Canada, Canadian Hwy 11, to Int'l Falls. Anybody make that trip? Any advice? Any must see, must eat, must stay, etc., along the way?
we did a portion of your trip. We stayed in Grand Rapids, and came down 1 to the shore. the gas station/restaurant in Finland makes a very good breatfast. from the shore we went up to the canadian border and then back down to Duluth. Hwy 1 from GR to the shore was fantastic, the drive north did get less exciting as the road tends to stay away from the shoreline some. but it's still pretty country. we did not have our passports so we cound not go into canada.
we rode all the way around Lake Superior a few years ago, great camping near Thunder Bay at Sleeping Giant Prov. Park and also on the NE side at Lake Superior Prov. Park near Wawa
was amazed how beautiful that trip was but beer sure is expensive in CN LOL
Go to Ouimet Canyon if you can, 45 minutes north of Thunderbay, worth the detour. Best part of North shore drive is Grand Marais to Thunderbay, IMHO. Also, don't miss Kakabecka Falls just west of Thunderbay.
We are leaving for there tomorrow(Sat). To Duluth, then the north shore to Thunder Bay, down into MI to do the Tunnel of Trees, then back up to the UP and down through WI. We are staying at the Nanabouchou Lodge near Grand Marais, it's a classic place. Good place in Marquette, MI too
Did the loop around Superior / Michigan last year and had a blast on this run! Think you will enjoy it! Be sure to stop downtown Duluth..really cool area. Have lunch at Grandma's located by the bridge! We stayed in Grand Marais...great little town with a view in every direction. Home made donught shop downtown if your there in the morning. Just across from the "Beaver House"...dont ask just stop and see what a Beaver Flick is...not exactly the type of Beaver Bait I was looking for but you learn something every day! HA Enjoy the trip and try the entire loop some time. The U.P. in Michigan is worth the ride (M119). South shore along Superior will not disappoint!
It's more fun to just go all the way around Superior if you are up there. A couple years ago there was a lot of construction on the Trans Canada highway, I guess they are making it all 4 lane, but the whole trip around is great and doable in 3 days easily if you are an experienced rider. We camped by Thunder Bay, the town really has nothing to see, great scenery around the north side of the lake. Then we camped just outside of WaWa. Breakfast in Batchawana Bay, then the next night we were in Duluth again and we didn't ride hard at all.
The ride from Thunder Bay to I falls is ok, but the road kind of sucks, or atleast it did last time I was on it in 06. Going anywere from I falls is boring as hell until you get closer to Ely again.
