I'm going to Sturgis this year for the first time and am wondering if anyone can suggest any other rides to do in the area while there. I know about these:
Spearfish Canyon
Van Ocker Canyon
Iron Mt Road
Peter Norbeck Scenic Byway & Needles Hiway
Badlands/Black Hills
We'll be coming from WA state and seeing Glacier NP on the way, along with Devils Tower. Will do BearTooth Hiway on the way home.
I would recommend the Wildlife Loop Road through Custer State Park. It can be a slow ride through, but it is still a nice ride to see everything from buffalo to wild donkeys.
On Wednesday, head West on 90 toward Wyoming. The ride to Devils Tower is a good one. I like to go in on the East side and out toward the West and back around. Wednesday in "Wyoming Wednesday". The little town of Hulett, Wy. and others put on a great party/street fair. You have to go right through it to get to the tower. On the return leg you have to go through Sundance. Another great place. Not to mention the ride.
From the bottom side of Rapid City, take Hwy 44 east. MAKE SURE YOU TOP OFF YOUR TANK!! The ride across the bottom of the BadLands is fantastic and you will not see a lot of people. Bring a few bottles of water and your camera. On the opposite end of the ride is a small town called Interior. They have a gas station, use it. Go north and stop at the Main office of the National Park, outside the building, there is music and food cooked on the grill and cold beer.
My advise is if you really want to enjoy the roads you have listed to ride get up early every morning to do them. I stay in the Hill City area every year and if I'm riding by 830am I can do the Iron Mt Rd/Needles Hwy/ Custer SP Loop in less than 2hrs. Later in the day it's gonna take double that. By noon most of the roads are packed along with the usual back-ups. If going into Sturgis going before noon makes parking easier on Main St if you're so inclined.
Needles hwy, Nemo road are a couple of other suggestions. When you get in the area grab one of the maps from a gas station (they're all over the place). They are an easy reference to carry around.
Definitely agree about the badlands.....it's like driving on the moon or something...nothing like it at all....and then you can stop at Wall Drug on the way back and eat a hot roast beef sandwich for dinner.
