The word Wisconsin has its origins in the name given to the Wisconsin River by one of the Algonquian speaking American Indian groups living in the region at the time of European contact
Door County is a great place but on certain weekends can be totally busy. The Lake Michigan side is very pretty and less crowded than the Green Bay side. Several wineries to visit, many top notch restaurants and beautiful scenic views. If you want some scenic roads take one of the county hiways that go from the lake side to the bay side. My personal favorite small little town in Door County is called Bailey's Harbor. An awesome bed and breakfast there called The Blacksmith Inn....
When driving up into Door County don't take the main highway, which is Hwy 42...instead, veer off onto Hwy B in Sturgeon Bay. B hugs the shore and is a much prettier drive. It will dump you off right at Shipwrecked in Egg Harbor. Stop in this very historic spot for a cold one.
Duluth is hosting the Tall Ships event from 8/29 - 8/3 and rooms will be extremely difficult to find around the area. Nothing is available on 8/31. The Bayfield area is nice but lodging might be a problem there as well.
The MN North Shore along Superior is an awesome ride with Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls. Also the Duluth Skyline Drive is a worthwhile drive with some incredible views.
Now that explains why I can't get a room on the 30th! I will be riding the north shore around Tofte on the 28th & 29th... I have to check out the waterfall at Grand Portage!
I was in Duluth last weekend for the air show and I35 is a mess. Alot of on and off ramps are closed in town due to the construction but it does have a North and South bound lane open all the way. It's not that bad just slows you down to 40mph. Don't let it push you away from Duluth, I love visiting that town.
if you've never been to duluth do it. my must do route when up there is lunch at the anchor bar in superior wis. then up the north shore to silver bay then to Ely. you could go through the iron range cities and down to walker and into detroit lakes then home to sodak. it is a great route.
