Vermont to Austin, TX
At the beginning of June I rolled out of Burlington, VT, jumped the ferry over to New York and pointed my bars south west.
I had never done a ride longer than 300 miles in a day. My best friend had moved to Austin, and my lady was out of town for a conference.
So I cashed in 10 days of vacation and took off.
I got to TN before I had some bike issues. My "cool" homemade coil relocation bracket broke and broke the coil. I rode 70 miles on one cylinder.
Found a motel near Abernathy's HD and waited for morning.
Covered under warranty.
Took awhile for them to squeeze it in, but I got fixed up and headed off.
Hook-up with a couple headed for Hot Springs, AR and rode with them for awhile. The lady had a large stuffed gorilla on the back of her Dyna that's arms waved in the wind. Awesome. They tell me the Flying Fish in Little Rock is the place to stop for dinner.
Stayed in some Super 8 motel somewhere in AR, and then rode all the way through to Austin, TX. Made a pit stop at the HD dealer in Texarkana after running out of gas. Oops.
Rode mountain bikes for 4 hours on Sunday.
Turned around and headed home Monday afternoon.
I was home for dinner Thursday evening.
I know there's not much of a story there, but it was my first road trip, I was solo, I camped most nights when it wasn't thunder storming, I rode 500+ miles per day, and I saw a whole lot of our country and met some great people.
The idea of just getting on the bike and going is a really good one. Can't wait for next year's trip. Where to?
10 days total trip, 9 days riding. 4427 miles.
2008 Nightster with Mini Apes, custom (tiny) saddle bags, no wind screen. (*edit, let me not forget the Roadking air shocks.)
Roll.
