Well next year I am going to my first real rally. I am heading up to Laconia NH next year I figured I should start looking around for lodging now. I am looking for someplace decent but not to far away no more then 10 miles or so and not to cheap but not over board looking to go from 11th to 17th I will be riding up and back but the wife will be taking the SUV to carry everything.
Also any tips for this rally would be great we do like to party but I will not be drinking and driving so I would need to stay someplace with in walking distance or if there are taxis up there.
Go to Laconua Bike Week online and talk to the folks. They are all local and can help ypu out. I think they are at www.lbw.net. Talk to Blaz who runs the site. Tell him hxturbo1 sent you. He helped me a ton when I went a few years ago. Be sure to ride the Kankamangus and go up Mt. Washington. There are lots of condos in and right outside of town.
Beautiful area. Lots of places to see.We stay in Loudon but that is about 1/2 hour drive away. The hotel is always full so we are not the only ones. Red Roof Inn if you are interested. Long taxi ride away though.
I live 15 miles south of Laconia and you couldn't pay me enough to go near that place during bike week but of course I'm a bit biased living so close. For a day or two, it's fun to see the sights but like every big gathering these days, it's totally commercialized, crazy overcrowded, and regulated/patrolled to hell. I think now you can't even ride into the Weirs anymore during the week (bus only) but it's been a while for me.
Don't know where you're coming from and how much $$$ you want to spend for a hotel but the areas around the lake and further north and west are great places for riding. I would suggest staying either further north in the White mountains (Mount Washington Hotel for one....starts @$259/night) The area is beautiful and great place for riding but not exactly for partying. A little further east, you're in North Conway where there is more actiom. Further south in Portsmouth, there are a few of the major hotels. Downtown Portsmouth is a great place at night with lots of good restaurants and bars. From there, it's 40 miles to Laconia plus you have the entire Maine coast (think Rt.1). It's a straight shot down Rt. 95 to Boston in less than an hour too.
My $.02
O.F...how about the idea of enjoying the run itself. I agree that Laconia would be a great palce to see without all of the people there but half the fun is the event.
