I found that staying outside of the main town or campground area is nice but trying to get to where the real activity is can be a challenge. Especially if you tie one on. I never saw a taxi anywhere and the cops are just waiting for DUI riders. Renting a house somewhere in town might be cool and another campground is Buffalo Chip. They have some great concerts.

been going to sturgis for many years, in the beginning it was a week of camping at the chip and all that comes with it. Now I usually get a room at Sylvan Lake Lodge in Custer State Park or a Primitive Cabin (no water/ go to bathhouse for shower) at my favorite campground near Hill City. If there's someone playing at the Chip I'd like to check out and the weathers ok (as in no rain/hail) I'll spend a nite or two there in a tent. Works for me.

+1. Just getting from Sturgis to the Chip or the Full Throttle is a pain in the azz.

The cheapest rooms you will find are about $115 down in Hot Springs. Go a little further north to Custer and the price jumps to $180 and up. Hill City area about $200 and up. Deadwood, forget about it...about $280 and up. You see how this works?

Now Sturgis is many different things to different people. You will hear a lot of people talking about the Chip and Full Throttle and the need to be close to those venues, but I know of a lot of others who have been to "Sturgis" many times but have yet to step foot any where near those places...nor do they want to. For those people any where in the Black Hills will work just fine.

I have been to all of the major runs across the country and found all them to have the same type vendors and the same type of displays and booths. Does that stop me from continuing to go?...heck no. I am a big fan of people watching, riding and socializing. I ride all day to the various points of interest, spend some time roaming the venues, and then take in a concert or just go to a bar and have a good time. Each person goes to these things for different reasons. Having said that.....I have never stayed at a place as fun as Glencoe. next up, next year New Orleans Bike Week.

Most of the camping areas in Sturgis have "Da Bus" that stops at camping area and take you to specific places like main street or the chip. Its cheaper than a DWI and don't have to worry about parking or drinking. They also sell beer on the bus but you have to finish it before you get off or toss it. Didnt see any taxi's either.

jntroese....next year will be their third year so they are fairly new to the game. I have heard it is really small but since it's in New Orleans there will be plenty to do if it's a bomb. It's in May and advertised on the web.
