Has anyone gone through Zion Natl Park in southern Utard? I was planning a couple hundred mile ride with my girlfriend this past weekend.
Not being too familiar with the area, just having moved here not too long ago,I got a map to check things out.Looked like a nice ride through Zion park, out to another highway, then to a Steakhouse and back.
So called about fee's,here is the good part!!
Car or light truck= $25
dually pick-up= $25 plus a $15 fee for a escort (through a 300 foot long tunnel!!)
Motorcycle= $12 for rider and bike only, extra $12 for passenger.
WTF!!!??
I called to make sure I did not misread anything,"yep that's it",the guy tells me.So I said" You are tellin me that a passenger in a car gets in free, but a passenger on a motorcycle has to pay 12 bucks?!?""So a motorcycle costs the same as a car, even though it is smaller and has less impact on the park?"
"Yes,I guess so" he says.
"Ok thank you" I say
So we didnt go that way,not that I couldn't afford the drive, but the Goddamn principal of gettin ripped off!!!
Am I wrong to think they are F%#kin' drivers??
I have a problem with those fees too. Heck that's the main road to get to Springdale and you gotta pay the fee, or buy a pass, even if you aren't stopping in the park. I believe they used to charge the same for a motorcycle as a car, at least they dropped it for a solo rider. On the other hand the Federal Park service need the funds, I *think* the fee is good for 5 days, and it's a nice ride though and worth it.
Me thinks a better ride altho longer would be up to cedar city take 14 to long valley junction N. to 12 and take the grand staircase/ escalante route up to richfield and back home. makes for a long ride. maybe spend the night and make a long weekend ride. yeah screw em, screw em all!!!
All the national parks are like that but it's usually worth the price of admission. I don't like fees either but realistically someone has to pay to maintain them. It's better than the alternative, the government just shutting them down because they're broke. We went to Zion on our way home from Vegas Bikefest last year and were glad we did. The bus trip up into the canyon is nice too (you can't take a motor vehicle on that road).

Yeah..that's the biggest ripoff I've seen in awhile. Went through with bike trailer on way from Vegas to Colorado and had to also pay for an escort. What a joke, I could have gone through that tunnel with three wide. In my estimation, anyone who wants to see Zion should come in the other way from Rt89 and ride just short of the tunnel. That's what I did on the bike.
That escort thing is stupid. When we went through the tunnel traffic was being stopped and only going one way at a time anyway. I couldn't see the point of the escort other than as a revenue generator. Entrance fees are one thing but tacked on, arbitrary extortion is BS.

I think they should charge you triple for referring to Utah as "Utard". If you don't like it here, go back to whatever much better place you came from.

I don't think he meant Utah it's self, I can see how someone could say something they didn't really mean if they had given it a little thought. Anyway, most people know that Utah is one of the most beautiful states we have. The blame goes to the National Parks Service and you have to admit it's
charge to go through the tunnel is a stretch.
IMO, I don't mind paying for any park entrance fees. If wasn't for the fees we may not have the luxury to enjoy the magnificent parks throughout the country.
