I rode through Georgia and S Carolina last weekend and keep hearing them when I went past sections of trees. Fortunately didn't get hit by any. Guess I'll be taking the northern route from now on.
I'm taking a trip from Northern West Virginia (no cicadas) down to Nashville the second week of June. Is there anyone from the Nashville area that can give me head's up on how bad they are or will be by then? REALLY don't want to have to wear a full face unless they are really bad.
I live in Nashville and they are not too bad right now, but all the hype is that they will be. It was pretty crazy the last time this brood came up, but they mostly hangout on the trees and walls. Areas that have had the ground dug (subdivisions, new roads, etc.) in the last 13 years will not have the bugs and they should be gone by mid July. They are very loud, so if you are tent camping plan on bringing earplugs.
Those are crazy little critters if I'm thinking of the right ones. Riding in Missouri years ago, I guess these things come out once every 7 years or somethin?? Not quite sure, but there were swarms of them, and the sound of them at night was almost deafening. Never seen or heard anything like that. My shield took a beating. Then when they were gone after a few weeks, you'd find their empty shells still holding on to plants and things and their shells all over the ground. millions and millions of them. unreal.
