Shade Valley. Why am I telling you this? I should keep it a secret.
we did shade valley 3 years ago and never again. too freaking much of a pain in the *** having to go thru the chip area and thru sturgis every time you wanted to go some where. the only positive I could say was clean bathrooms. food vendor absolutely sucked when we were there.
I stayed at Hog Heaven about 6 years ago and enjoyed it. No complaints. Staying at the Broken Spoke this year. I hope not to be there much during the day so I won't have to deal with the ZERO SHADE...
when ever we go to Sturgis and camp we stay at Chris' campground in spearfish. it is a 1/2 mile from the entrance to sperfish cayon. it is quite and everyone is friendly and the place is clean.
I stayed at the Broken Spoke last year. While there may not be shade, I was out and about during the daytime anyway.
The food was decent. They had a burger/dog/steak stand that was good and fair priced as well and a few side vendors including Pizza Hut pizza and BBQ chicken. Expect to pay 7-10 per dinner or 6-8 per lunch at any of the vendors.
Drinks were always cold and ready and the entertainment was fit for my generation (80's hair metal). All in all, a professional place that did not disappoint me.
Stayed in Glencoe last year. Lot's of shade, friendly people, good scenery but way, way too much of a pain in the *** to get through Sturgis every day.
Stayed at Elkview Campground. Does have some shade, small creek, Shower building. Serves, breakfast, lunch and dinner along with entertainment in the evenings. Believe the daily rate is $22.00 for drop in's. Rally rate for the weeek is around $120. You can still hear the drone of Harley's 24/7 but it is a low drone. Believe it is 5 miles south of Sturgis on I-90 at exit 37. Da Bus also has service to Elkview at $15.00 per person, per day or $35 for the Rally week. It was nice to be able to take Da Bus into Sturgis and not have to worry about parking for the day. Bus was running from Sturgis every half hour to most of the campgrounds in the area. Was able to ride all day, park the bike at the campgrounds and ride Da Bus into Sturgis for the evening activities.
I stayed at the Broken Spoke last year. The campground itself was fine except for zero shade. Fighting the traffic past the Full Throttle/thru
Sturgis to get to the Hills was another negative. The police camped out on the highway going north to the camprground. Went through there twice a day for most of the week, and only once did I not see someone pulled over. Hog heaven ,or Days end would get my vote over the B/S for these reasons.
I've stayed at both and prefer Hog Heaven over the two, for much of the same reasons already posted. It just depends on what your looking for, we didn't stay at the campground very ofter so we couldn't see spending more and dealing with the traffic just to go to the camp ground to spend the night. If you plan on spending more time at the camp ground then I would go with Broken Spoke, if you plan on getting out and doing stuff away from the camp ground then just stick with Hog Heaven. You've been a few time it sounds like so if you want a different scene then give it a try at the Broken Spoke, thats the only way to know for sure. Might want to make reservations quick because it's coming up pretty quick!
