Default Monument Valley, Utah

Anyone rode through Monument Valley ? Would like to see the area, maybe tent camp and watch the sunset and sunrise. Can't find anything on internet regarding motorcycle trips through that area. Comments welcome....

I think monument valley is in Arizona. Anyways you can't ride through the valley itself. You have to pay at the gate on the reserve, once you are in you can take a jeep tour. It,s a vast area, really cool to see in person. Ride the Moki dugway if you can, it's an hour or so North in Utah passed Mexican Hat.

You're kidding, right? Google: Monument Valley motorcycle for a ton of links and ride reports/info. Take a look at the Moki Dugway route out of Mexican Hat, UT. I think it could be just what you're looking for.

Go to You tube and I have a Go Pro Video of the ride through Monument Valley. Great ride. Go to the Welcome center and the food there is real good. Some of the ride is in Utah and some is in Arizona.

If you're really dead set on going, leave the bike at the welcom center and take a jeep tour, the roads are really crappy. Personally, I wasn't all that thrilled with it.

Or just skip Monument Valley, and head north into Utah to Arches and Canyon lands National Parks. Much nicer places than Monument valley.

Bill..are we talking about the same place? The ride through Monument Valley, at least to me, is simply the US 163 section between Bluff, Utah and Kayenta, AZ. No Jeeps, no welcome center, just a sweet piece of 2-lane. Probably the most photographed stretch of highway ever. Yes, that little side trip on Moki Dugway out of Mexican Hat, UT has a section that is unpaved but it's easily manageable on a bike.

Edit: I see a visitor center has opened since I was there last in '07. Pretty popular stretch of highway, I guess.

Just go there, you will not be dissapointed. The Moki Dugway is really cool as is Southern Utah.

You can camp there. It's all part of the Indian park. The campsites are right on the edge overlooking the formation known as mittens. If you have seen Easy Rider you have seen that formation. There is a 17 mile loop through the valley but it is dirt and there may be some big whoop de doos and the loose sand is very soft. You can ride it on a Harley but the bike will get big time dirty. It's better suited for a KLR.

Hooking up with an indian jeep tour is the cleaner way to go. You don't even have to sign up in the welcome center, if you park the bike in the lot, you will be approached. Make your own deal.

Yes, Arches and Canyonlands is nice and paved but to miss Monument Valley would be a big mistake.

Camp there, get up early and shoot the sunrise coming up behind the Mittens.

If you want to motel it, Gouldings Lodge is just a couple of miles west. They show John Wayne movies each night and have a neat little John Wayne/John Ford museum. That's were all the movie stars stayed. Of course it's the only other choice.

The highways around Monument Valley are good. Its the dirt/gravel roads in the park that are rotten. For what we paid for admission I expected better conditions.

PS We also stayed a Gouldings Lodge. Again a bit pricey for what you get.

The Desert Rose Inn in Bluff Utah is very nice, especially the cabins. Highly recommend it.

At Kayenta, be sure to stop at the Burger King. It's not only a BK, but also a museum dedicated to the WWII Navaho codetalkers. http://www.bridgeandtunnelclub.com/b...king/index.htm

And yes, Monument Valley is worth the visit, if for no other reason than you can tell everyone within earshot "I've been there!" everytime a western comes on TV. That's what my wife does, at any rate.
