The wife and I went in July 2006and wehad a great time.We used the Micro-tel in Maggie Valley as our base camp. They have a spacious parking lot and you can pull your trailer in andunload your bike and your good to go till you leave.Very nice rooms with living rooms and kitcenettevery cheap as well, I think we paid $58 a night. Everything you wnat to see is all real close. The first day we rode to Cherokee, Clingmons Dome, Galinburg Tenn. and Pigeon Forge. The second day we rode to Robbinsville and up through to the Dragon and the Cherhola Skyway and we spoke to some locals and we rode some roads that we never would have found. It was a nice relaxing time we would stop and go soak out feet in the streams and just relax. You will enjoy it. We did a lot of exploring. The wife loved the trip and we keep the kids at home so it was nice for us to spendsome alone time together.

try this place out its a great place and you want to talk about cheap but very clean. www.kickstandlodge.com . use to run by fred and moe but fred died about 3 weeks ago and m said that she is going to keep the place open and like i said you can get a bunk house for like $18 a night (i think) per person. the company is alway top notch because the only thing they allow in the grounds is motorcycles.

Leaving Sat to ride the Trace up to Tn. Any suggestions for roads going towards the Dragon once I cross the state line from MS? Thanks

ORIGINAL: DragonNester

Hi,

I live about 22 miles from the Dragon in Tennessee. March is a transition month it can be good or bad. Even in early April there can be ice formed over night on the roads at that elevation. The Dragon is a challenge type road...not prone to frequent stops for photo shoots. It is fun, but keep your head (stay focused) don't push the envelope of skill level. After all it is 318 turrns in 11 miles and they are unforgiving (no shoulders). Weekends on the Dragon are out unless you're a fast crotch rocketeer. The most scenic roads in the area are the Foothills Parkway and the Cherohala Skyway. Be sure to take them in while here. The best and closest Harley Dealership is Smoky Mountain Harley-Davidson in Maryville TN. I suggest you call them to store your trailer and get the lowdown on the area. Townsend TN is the small town I suggest to stay while here (good motels). It's close enough to Maryville, the Foothills Parkway, Gatlinburg, Cherokee NC, Clingmans Dome, the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway to be ridden in any day ride out of Townsend. All with really nice scenic rides to each. If you do decide to stay in Townsend there wouldn't be a need to store your trailer anywhere but at the motel you stay at.

Have a fun and safe trip.

If you come in from I-40 (through Nashville), take it to Knoxville to Smoky Mountains exit Hwy 129 and follow itinto Maryville to hwy 321lefttoward Townsend, TN. Out of Maryville about 10 miles you'll see Foothills Parkway to the right ( beautiful road...only 23 miles long). Take it to where it dead ends at hwy 129 at Chilhowee Lake. Turn left. you'll be on the Dragon just after you leave the lake.

I hope this helps.

I'd hook up with you if I could but I'll be headed to the Texas Hill Country then. Have a good time and take in the Cherohala Skyway while here. They'll point you in the right direction at Deals Gap.

Have to agree with everyone else here, been to NC,TN, and N.GA many times. June may be your best bet, we were there last May on the 20th, had weather from the 30's to the 60's with sleet and rain for 4 days. What ever you do you will enjoy it, and you will be back. I live in GA and have riden all over, there is not to many places more enjoyable to ride.

Ride Safe.......
