The Tail is short, fun, dangerous and a bunch of work. The Skyway is long, fun, fast and did I say fun!! Yep it's my favorite for sure, but watch out for bears of the furry kind.
Another road that I have ridden a few times is hwy 116. Starts just off hwy 330 ne of Oliver Springs TN, comes out a Frozen Head State Natural Area. Near Wartburg TN. At one time there was a motorcycle rally help at a campground on this road. I think it was "Greywolf" or something like that. I recomend starting at the Oliver Springs end, however. Good ride. That Wahah road mentioned in anther post starts at the west end of the Nantahala Gorge and come out on hyw 64. Last time I was there the pavement was grooved and wet. Did not make for good traction. Grooved pavement is one thing, wet grooved pavement is quit another.
Hwy 80 north from Marion, NC is called the 'Devil's Staircase'...very nice twisties on very good roads and at some good speeds.....take it on up to Roan Mountain... you'll love it!
Made a trip last year too that area. Started in Cleveland TN, road 411 north to Pigeon Forge. Rained, next day to Boone NC, Good day. Next day left Boone for the BRP, Rain and fog. Came down BRP, crossed Lin cove Viaduct. Never even saw it. Couldn't even see the gaurd rails from the center of my lane. I thought they must have moved it. My only salvation was a car in front of me that had tail lights. Got off the BRP at hyw 80, went to Marion headed toward Asheville. Got to Asheville and it had cleared up enough that when we saw a sign for the BRP, we thought we would try it again. Got on, rode about 10 miles and RAIN. It rained so hard it just about washed me off the road. Made in into Cherokee, crossed 441 into Gatlinburg for the night. Highway 80 was my escape route from the BRP!
Was there for the first time in July. Left Memphis in the morning before finishing the day with a sandwich at Smoky Mtn Harley then road the Dragon. Long day with the cruise on. Was doing the Dragon but nice to get off before the cars came flying thru. Didn't do much riding in the area as it was in the middle of our trip to Virginia.
Spent 5 days riding in that area in June, great trip there wasn't anything I didn't like about the area, this will definatley be a repeat trip one day.
