Just pick a direction & go. Take 2lane roads. Stop in the small town bars and ask the locals what there is to see. Camp and meet your neighbours. Don't plan where you're going to stop for the night. Enjoy the great country you have.
Try it this way find an are you would like to ride. Plan a trip there setup in a camp ground. The ride out of there everyday in different direction ending up back at the base each night.
We do this every year end up riding 3- 4000 miles.
Last year was Cadiz KY we rented a nice place on the Lake and rode all over for 7 days two days down two home total 11 days.
This year it is Gatlinburg TN. we will stay there and ride the Dragon again it has been years and some other great rides in the area.
We just found it works better than heading off 1500 mile one way then another 1500 home .
Head for Maggie Valley
Great place to base alot of great rides from You can ride there easy from Indiana in a day. Lots of campgrounds in that area and inexpensive mom and pop motels.Very motorcycle friendly.Blue ridge Parkway is minutes away.Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway are a nice day ride from there (as are Gatlinburg and the Smokies if you like the tourist traps) and there are other wonderful roads in every direction.Maggie Valley is not real touristy but does have it's share of decent places to eat and is home to the Wheels Through Time Motorcycle Museum (although there are plans for the owner to relocate it out west). My wife and I spent a week there last summer and could easily have stayed longer
