We try to do the Skyline Drive that starts in Front Royal, VA and runs 105 miles (35MPH) down to Front Royal, VA where the BRP begins.
Huh? ...Starts in Front Royal and runs down to Front Royal???
We plan on doing the Skyline as well this year, in July. Running from Front Royal VA down to around Waynesboro VA. Then we need to cut West and find an interesting route on our way up towards Michigan.

When we going to, or returning from Front Royal,VA we usually do our stayover in Somerset, PA. (I think it's Exit 110 on the PA Turnpike).
There's a H-D dealer within walking distance of most motels, as well as good restaurants, and the Flight 93 Memorial is in Shanksville (a short ride, maybe 12 miles from the dealer).
The PA turnpike(I-70/I-76), runs west the splits S/E of Pittsburgh, I follow I-76 into Ohio and then oto the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90 West) to I-475 North to US 23 North into Michigan.

Somerset sounds good for a stopping point on the way down there. Thanks.
On the way back, we're thinking of heading West on I-64 from Waynesboro to Charleston WV. That route looks like it could be interesting. Then we'd just head North on the way home up through Detroit.
There are much better routes from Waynesboro west than I-64. Try US Rt. 50, maybe travel up around the New River Gorge Bridge area near Fayetteville, WV. US Rt. 250 west is a great ride, US Rt. 33. Much better roads. That is unless you need to make up some time.

This is a toll road).
The BRP is approximately 469 miles long (45MPH).
Speed and drive times on both of there roads depend on weather and road conditions.
As far as I kow there is only 4 places that offer lodging on the Parkway.
MM 86- Peaks of Otter.
MM 169-Rock ****.
MM 241-Doughton Park.
MM 408-Mount Pisgah.
FYI-We've stayed in the Bluff's Lodge at Doughton Park and it's quaint (no phone or TV in room) but the have a huge patio for socializing and a restaurant/gift shop down the hill right on the Parkway but I would recommend reservations just in case.
For more lodging you will to exit the Parkway and go down to one of the towns
better add stations inn m/c resort at mile post 248 to that list 1/4 mi off pkwy.
